What's the Best Airport to Fly Into?

The city of Rio de Janeiro is serviced by two airports: Santos Dumont and Galeão. If at all possible, we recommend that flights be booked into Santos Dumont, located approximately 20 minutes by taxi from the neighborhood of Leblon, where most guests will be staying. The larger alternative airport, Galeão, is OK but is located approximately 50 minutes away by taxi. Uber is also available but we do not recommend its use from the airport into the city, as hailing a ride at the pickup area can be notoriously difficult.

What Should I Bring With Me?

Pack very lightly, taking into account that December is the height of summer in Brazil. Temps will hover around 35 degrees Celsius and we’ll spend almost all of our time in shorts, tees, and swimwear. The wedding will have a garden formal, colorful feel to it. No need to go overboard. On the streets, avoid wearing jewelry, heavily branded or flashy items of clothing, or any other items that may attract unwanted attention. Be mindful of your belongings and your surroundings while out and about.

How Will I Get Around?

The best ways to get around in Rio are by taxi, Uber, and metro. The taxi works well. If you find there is a language barrier, write the address down for the driver. It is strongly advised that if you decide to hail an Uber ride, do not hang around the streets with a flashy phone in hand. Either do it indoors and then step out when your vehicle arrives, or do it inconspicuously. Pick pockets are not uncommon. The metro is a third option but the signs and instructions are not exactly tourist friendly. Use it as a last resort. If you're considering renting a car and you're not from Brazil, don't do it. The traffic is crazy, parking is crazy, and it's easy to end up somewhere that you wish you hadn't. Alex & Ana will be organizing van service for specific events and the details will be communicated closer to the their dates.

Where Should I Stay?

The couple will stay in the centrally located neighborhood of Leblon where Ana grew up, adjacent to famous Ipanema and blocks away from the beach. We recommend that guests stay close, as many of the events will originate from here. The wedding itself will be hosted in the artsy neighborhood of Santa Teresa, on the foot of the mountains, approximately 20 minutes away. Although there are many hotels to choose from in the Leblon/Ipanema area, we suggest you book a well-rated AirB&B flat. It will cost approximately half as much and there are lots of good options out there. BEWARE, some flats include “Leblon” in the header but upon closer inspection, are situated in Vidigal - a bad neighborhood. Don’t book there. Also, December is a busy time of year so make your reservation as early as possible. Feel free to contact Alex or Ana for recommendations before finalizing your booking.
