Our Story

A Vacation to Remember

Sometimes the best things happen when you least expect them. Our story started on the very last day of my summer vacation in 2020, and it’s still crazy to me how close we came to never meeting at all. Roland was stationed in Jacksonville, North Carolina, and I was staying in Emerald Isle, about 30 minutes away. Close enough to matter… but far enough that our paths easily could have never crossed. We matched on Bumble. I was supposed to be heading home the very next day. It would have been so easy to just let the conversation fade, blame the timing, and move on. But with a little bit of Roland’s charm (and his dry sense of humor that still gets me), I decided to invite him out for a round of mini golf. Eighteen holes later, neither of us wanted the night to end. What started as mini golf turned into sitting on the beach, stargazing and listening to the waves crash along the shore. There was something so peaceful about it. It was the kind of quiet that leaves space for deep thoughts and long pauses. Luckily for both of us, I filled most of those pauses by yapping the entire time. At some point, I finally glanced at my phone to check the time. 4:00 AM. And nearly a hundred missed calls from my mom. Oops. Reality hit quickly. We packed up our cooler, walked back toward the parking lot, and stood there knowing we had to say goodbye. It felt like the end of an adrenaline rush. It was that kind of spark you don’t expect but instantly recognize. There was undeniable chemistry, but the distance between Pittsburgh and Jacksonville felt overwhelming. Starting something new, knowing we lived states apart, seemed almost irresponsible. But I had a 10-hour drive ahead of me the next day. And somewhere along that long stretch of highway, I decided I wasn’t letting this one slip away. I came up with a plan to see him again... because it had to be done. And well… the rest is history.

Our Favorite Things to Do Together

Annual Fall Hiking Trip – Every year when the leaves start turning, we pack our bags and hit the trails. It’s non-negotiable. Crunchy leaves, oversized sweatshirts, and pretending we’re professional nature photographers and mountain climbers. Living Outside All Summer – If it’s warm and sunny, we’re not inside. From sunup to sundown, you’ll find us somewhere outdoors. On the farm, on a trail, or just soaking up every second of fresh air. Chasing Izzy & Maizie – Our two puppies run the house (and the yard… and our lives). Most evenings are spent throwing toys, giving belly rubs, and wondering how two dogs can create so much chaos and so much joy at the same time. Sourdough Era (Still in Beta Testing) – We are currently in our “homestead sourdough” phase. Some loaves are beautiful. Some are… humbling. But we persist. Farm Life, Always Busy – The farm keeps us grounded and constantly moving. There’s always something to fix, build, clean, or improve, and we genuinely love it. Anything Horse-Related – Okay, this started as Lexi’s thing… but Roland is slowly converting into a full-blown cowboy. Boots are becoming more frequent. The transformation is happening. Gym Dates > Dinner Dates – Squats, chest press, leg day. We motivate each other and call it quality time. Nothing says romance like sharing a bench and arguing over who forgot to rerack the weights. Espresso, Always – Our espresso machine works harder than we do. Morning latte. Afternoon pick-me-up. “Just one more” at night. It’s a lifestyle. Medical Nerd Conversations – Just two healthcare nerds casually discussing blood pressure trends and lab values like it’s pillow talk. Because nothing says romance like vital signs. “Let’s Fix It Ourselves” Mentality – Why call someone when Roland has tools and YouTube exists?

Our Life Together

What started with mini golf and a 4AM beach goodbye has grown into something steady, purposeful, and deeply rooted. During the week, we live in two very different worlds, and somehow they fit perfectly together. Roland is currently in physical therapy school and is expected to graduate in December 2026. His days are filled with anatomy labs and learning how to help people regain strength and independence. If something hurts, he’s already analyzing your posture (Bonus: Lexi gets free massages and chiropractic work). Lexi works as a physician assistant in a skilled nursing facility, caring for elderly patients with complex medical needs. Her days are full of early mornings, lab results, medication adjustments, and making sure her patients feel heard and supported. Yes, we do occasionally discuss vital signs over dinner. But outside of scrubs and textbooks, our life looks very different. We’re slowly building a life that revolves more around sunrises than screens. Farm chores before work. Espresso before everything. Evenings spent outside instead of in. We’re transitioning into the kind of people who would rather raise and grow our own food, bake our own bread (still mastering sourdough), and know exactly where dinner came from. Summers are sunup to sundown outdoors. There’s always a project in progress, something being built, something being planted, or something being improved. We love the structure and science of our careers, but we’re equally drawn to a simpler, slower, more intentional way of living. One where hard work feels tangible and meaningful. And we’re just getting started.
