When planning to arrive to Chania, Crete you can either arrive by ferry from the Piraeus Port in Athens or arrive by plane. The airport is about 10 miles from downtown Chania. You will need a car to get around the island. Renting a car really is the best way to explore! If you plan on renting a car you will need to apply for an international drivers license online. Please keep in mind that you are in another country and they do not drive as calmly as they do here. Roads are much smaller so it is always a great idea to get insurance on your rental car. If you plan on traveling to or from the island by ferry, a great site to visit is www.DirectFerries.com. This site will allow you to book tickets online in advance. However, please be aware that most ferries come and go from the next major city which is Rhethymno, Crete. Rhethymno is about an hour drive from Chania. You can also visit www.west-crete.com for more helpful travel info.
