Flight

Rome (FCO)Rome (FCO)

The closest airport to Todi is located just outside of Rome (FCO). For transportation from the airport to Todi, one can choose to rent a car and travel to Todi (~1.5 hour drive) or to take the train and a taxi ride to Todi (more on that below under “Trains”). If renting a car, we recommend waiting until leaving Rome to rent a car. It can be very challenging to find parking in Rome and to navigate roads that allow cars (beware of “ZTL” or “limited traffic zones”). If exploring Rome, most of the sites are within walking distance of one another or a short Metro/bus ride and cars are really not needed.

Flight

MilanMilan

There are three airports in Milan - the international airport Malpensa (MXP) may be the most convenient. Linate (LIN) may also be a good option if transferring from another location in Europe. These airports are located near public transit and can allow you to explore Milan. They will also have options for car rentals if preferring to fly into Milan and driving to Todi. Milan is further away (>5 hour drive), but there is much to explore along the way! Florence, Pisa, Bologna, etc. can all be great places to stop and explore as you travel down to Todi.

Train

TrainsTrains

Public transit is a great option to get from Rome or Milan to the region of Umbria. We also recommend taking public transit to a town closer to Todi (e.g. Perugia, Orte, Orvieto, or Terni) and renting a car from these towns to get to Todi. For example, Perugia is a very convenient option to take the train directly from Rome and then renting a car from the train station in Perugia (~40 minute drive between Perugia and Todi). For example, there are lots of trains with few changes from Rome to Perugia, and Perugia is about ~30 minute drive to Todi. We may also be able to arrange shuttle service from Perugia to Todi if you prefer not to rent a car - please reach out if this is of interest!

Travel Note

Other informationOther information

If choosing to drive most of the way to Umbria (Todi) from Milan or Rome, the expressways do charge tolls and are charged by distance traveled. Tolls can be easily paid by card. Most credit cards are accepted in Italy (some place may not accept American Express). Most credit cards will charge an exchange rate fee - unless otherwise noted by your credit card company (some do not, but it may be helpful to check before you arrive so as not to be surprised at a future date). Using AppleCard on an iPhone does not charge an additional fee to use internationally. We recommend using this whenever possible. One can also use the AppleCard feature when using public transit within the city (city busses or metro) and not have to purchase individual tickets or a separate transit card that you have to load with money. If you are coming from the US, don’t forget to get an adaptor to charge your phone, laptop, drone, playstation, and so forth.

For all the days along the way
