For out-of-towners, this is our favorite place to hang with the wilder "locals". One of the best zoological parks we've visited, plus it's free to visit. There is small onsite parking for a fee, we've always used Metro to get here.
Aviation and Space fanatics will be impressed by one of the largest collections of aircraft and spacecraft on display. Highlights include the Space Shuttle Orbiter Discovery, Concorde, and a SR-71 Blackbird that could travel over Mach 3. Admission is free, but the museum does charge $15 for vehicle for parking.
A large waterfall and rapids of the Potomac River, as a National Park service unit, there is a small entrance fee. The falls are quite impressive for being close to an urban center. Frequently, kayakers come right up to the base of the falls. Surrounding the site are old waterworks as well.
If you're interested in a somewhat off the main path State Park, this one might be of note. This Northern Virginia park offers many outdoor activities and programs. It has hiking trails, 3 miles of paved multi-use trails, a large picnic area, a playground, a car-top canoe launch and a visitor center. Canoe, kayak and bicycle rentals are also available. Bird watching, especially for American bald eagles, and guided canoe trips of Kane's Creek and Belmont Bay are favorites with park visitors. The park's wetlands, forest, open water, ponds and open fields make it ideal for environmental study and wildlife observation.
Beautiful landscaped grounds and gardens is a must for those who appreciate flowers or photographers looking for inspiration.
This is a rather unusual museum, and the most offbeat museum in Washington DC. It's a blend between a hotel, artist's retreat, museum, antique shop where every room can be booked for an overnight stay, but is filled with a rather eclectic display of Americana specific to each room's theme. NOTE THAT ADVANCED RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.
This expansive unit of the National Park system offers miles of hiking trails and one that offers a number of geocaching opportunities for those who are familiar with one of our favorite activities.
Northern Virginia is becoming a hot spot for local wines. This popular spot is on the edge of the historical Bull Run battlefield.
