FREETOWN is Sierra Leone's capital and the largest metropolitan city. It is a port city on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean. The population of Freetown is 1.2 million (2020). The town is rich in culture, history, historical landmarks, and  street cuisine. Freetown also houses the largest natural harbor in Africa. The climate is tropical and humid all year. December - February is the Harmattan period of the Dry Season.  This period is generally cool and foggy in the mornings and late evenings, with winds blowing from the Sahara. The day time is usually sunny and hot. HISTORICAL LANDMARKS & SITES BELOW

Travel Note

Cotton Tree

The Cotton Tree is a historical symbol of Freetown. The "Cotton Tree" gained importance in 1792 when a group of former African American slaves, who had gained their freedom by fighting for the British during the American War of Independence, settled on site of modern day Freetown.

Travel Note

Bunce Island

Is situated in Freetown Harbor, the estuary of the Rokel River and Port Loko Creek, about 20 miles upriver from Freetown. The island measures about 1,650 feet by 350 feet and houses a castle that was built by the Royal Africa Company in c.1670. To mark the 2007–2008 bicentennial of Britain's abolition of the slave trade, a team at James Madison University created a three-dimensional animation of the castle as it was in 1805, and an exhibit on the site that was displayed to museums all across the U.S. which is now held by the Sierra Leone National Museum. Tens of thousands of Africans were shipped from here to the North American colonies of South Carolina and Georgia to be forced into slavery. Although the island is small, its strategic position at the limit of navigation for ocean-going ships in Africa's largest natural harbor made it an ideal base for European slave traders.

Travel Note

Leicester Peak

Fantastic views of Freetown. The road is paved all the way to this point and there are benches to sit on while you admire the view. Parking is available. Leicester Peak is also where you'll find The US Embassy.

Travel Note

National Railway Museum

This museum is an emerging gem. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. If you make it there, you are two blocks away from The Old Fourah Bay College building which is worth a quick look.
