San Juan International Airport

Vieques is a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico, and involves a bit more travel to get to. After flying into San Juan International airport (SJU), you will need to arrange either a smaller “hopper” flight or take a taxi to the ferry drop off location in Cieba, which is about an hour away from the airport. Rental cars are not allowed on the cargo ferries, so if you choose to rent a car, it will be located on Vieques. The last ferry to Vieques leaves around 7:00 to 8:00 pm. NOTE: Flights arriving after 6:00 pm in San Juan will probably not make the last ferry to Vieques.

The Ferry System

The ferry system is seeing continual improvements, including a small Catamaran that makes the trip from the dock at Ceiba several times a day. It takes around a half an hour on the Cat, and there is a larger cargo boat that runs several times a day as well–though the trip takes almost twice as long. Tickets are purchased at the ticket counter or online for $2. The schedule is constantly changing, and there are possible delays depending on weather, etc. It is currently running well though, and usually on-time.

Vieques Airport

Expect to pay around $75-200 per person each way between San Juan and Vieques depending on the airline and departure airport you choose. You can save some money by flying to Vieques from Isla Grande Airport (15 minutes / $20 cab ride from SJU) rather than flying from San Juan International. Plan accordingly! There are no late night flights to Vieques! The last departure from San Juan typically departs around 6:30PM. There are various flights from SJU to Vieques via the following providers: Air Flamenco Vieques Air Link Cape Air Remember: Puerto Rico is a United States territory. U.S. citizens do NOT need a passport for travel to Puerto Rico.
