We met through a small group at our church, Cambridge Community Fellowship Church (shout out to Anne, Dan, Derek, and the rest of Souperfun HC!). Dustin initially thought Aimee was hispanic (the last name was a bit confusing), and Aimee thought Dustin was a pretty handsome nerd, but too cool for school. We didn’t get to know each other too well until we both worked on the planning committee for Soccer Nights, a summer camp that CCFC runs every year for the neighborhood kids. The relationship blossomed in a halting manner (mostly due to Dustin’s complete inability to read signals) over making food, grabbing drinks and good conversation. It moved so slowly, in fact, that Aimee wasn’t sure if she had been “friend-zoned,” until Dustin invited her over to a New Year’s party, and (in a stroke of boldness that still surprises him to this day) kissed her at midnight, which made his intentions quite clear!
After climbing the figurative mountain of grad school, Dustin really wanted to go climb some literal mountains, and made plans to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from Canada to Mexico. The natural reaction to this from many people, including his long-suffering girlfriend, was “You want to do what?!” Still, Aimee was super supportive, so Dustin wanted to do something to help connect her to the trip, considering that she was in the middle of her own grad school journey. After a lot of deliberation (thoughtful gifts are more Aimee’s strong suit), he decided to carry a teddy bear (a twin to a bear he bought her for their first Valentine’s Day together) with him the whole way, taking pictures with it. After the hike, he compiled those pictures into a storybook for Aimee. On the day they celebrated their second anniversary of being a couple, they made some of their favorite foods together, went ice skating, and had dinner at their favorite restaurant in Boston. When they got back to Aimee’s apartment, Dustin presented the book and the bear, now adorned with a heart emblazoned with the all-important question “Will you marry me?” The fact that you’re on our wedding website should should be a pretty clear giveaway as to her response.
