It started as a chance introduction through a mutual friend, eventually blossoming into an unexpected friendship, and then - one day - grew into a once-in-a-lifetime love. Like it was meant to be all along. Aida, a proud sister of Chi Omega, had spent years hanging out with her boys from Tau Kappa Epsilon, especially when her best friend Shawn joined the fraternity. Joey would end up rushing TKE in 2007. Soon after, Aida and Joey reconnected and found themselves spending time together. With the excuse of common friends, Aida started coming over to Joey’s TKE apartment after class to practice beer pong, play (aka lose) Super Smash Brothers, and anything else to be around one another. As time went on, they grew closer together, going on spring break adventures with their Chi O and TKE brothers and sisters. One memorable night, Joey invited Aida to go ice skating at the newly minted rink at the university. Aida was nervous she would keel over, but Joey reassured her, promising that he would never let her fall. Unsure if the evening was intended as a date, Aida couldn’t help but be excited for the evening. However, upon arriving at his apartment, she quickly realized it was not a date when she was greeted by a large group of mutual friends. Nevertheless, she was determined the have fun and enjoy the evening. As expected, Aida was a terrible skater and had zero balance on the ice. But, as promised, Joey held her close and never let her fall. Every time she began to slip, Joey held her up with all his strength (talk about a quads workout!) as she clung to him for dear life. And, while he kept his promise to never let her fall, he wiped out several times himself just to keep her steady. That night remains one of Aida’s most cherished memories of her life. Over the course of their friendship, they came to share in so many more sweet and fun moments like that. They also leaned on each other through family illnesses and lost loved ones. They laughed, cried, danced, and even fought (there was a particularly disastrous incident involving mac and cheese). Yet beneath the surface, a deeper connection simmered, unspoken, and unrealized. Oblivious to each other’s feelings, they went their separate ways after graduation. Each went on to carve out their own place in the world. Careers flourished, relationships came and went, but memories of their college connection lingered in both of their minds. For Aida, Joey remained the big what-if of her life. He was the best guy she had ever known, and he was never far from her thoughts. For Joey, Aida was, simply, the one who got away. Years passed by. And, thanks to social media, they were never too far away. One day in October, Joey made a comment on a funny video Aida posted to Facebook. And with just the span of a smile, they started talking again. By chance, Aida was planning to spend an extended period back home in Florida. Wanting to see a familiar face, she invited him to visit her in south Florida while she was there. As soon as they reconnected, they found themselves falling into old rhythms of playful banter and light flirting. Amidst the laughter and shared memories, they begin to realize that what they once brushed off as mere friendship was actually something deeper—a connection that had endured despite the years and miles apart. Their love story, peppered with laughter, mishaps, and the kind of quirky moments only Hallmark could script, is a reminder that sometimes the best things in life are the ones we stumble upon when we least expect it. As they embark on this new chapter of their lives together, they do so with hearts full of gratitude for the past that brought them here and the anticipation for the future that awaits- a future where their love story continues to unfold. Moreover, they know their story is just beginning—a rom-com sequel with endless possibilities, where laughter is the soundtrack and love is the happy ending they've both been waiting for.
