These were the words that Furman University's president shared at Ahlam and Will's freshman orientation in 2009. There were probably no two people more skeptical of that prediction than the two of them. Looking back, however, it is hard to imagine that their paths would not have crossed. Through mutual friends, they quickly became part of the same social circles. As chemistry majors, they shared many of the same classes, and later joined the same undergraduate research lab. During one summer of research, they even worked side by side in the same fume hood. What began as a friendship during their time at Furman gradually grew into something more. Senior year is the worst time to start a relationship, but that is exactly what they did. They fortunately both ended up in Michigan after graduating from Furman, but their time in the same state did not last long due to their career paths. Ahlam remained in Michigan while Will moved to South Carolina. There was a brief period when they were only five hours apart because Will moved to Kentucky, but that milestone lasted only a couple of months before Ahlam relocated to North Carolina. In 2022, they finally ended the long-distance chapter of their relationship and began building a life together in North Carolina. Now, they are thrilled to return to Greenville to celebrate their marriage at Furman University, the place where their story first began.
