Best kept secret of the Keweenaw. Adrienne and Jameson always start with the French Toast Pork Belly. Views are fantastic but seating is limited, so call ahead.
The Keweenaw Land Trust has several properties in the Keweenaw Peninsula, but Hungarian Falls is definitely one of the most popular and one of the better marked nature areas. If you're in town for a while, we recommend checking out the views and the beautiful fall colors.
For those who just have to see Lake Superior, McLain State Park is a great place to do so. It has some beach - though Lake Superior is never really warm - and some forest. If the universe is generous, it's a good place to see the Northern Lights (check out NOAA's website beforehand to see if you can catch a glimpse - https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/aurora-30-minute-forecast).
This is about an hour drive north of Houghton in beautiful Copper Harbor, but the views are unbeatable! Plenty of hiking in the vicinity as well for those who are able. "Brockway Mountain Drive is the highest paved road between the Rockies and the Alleghenies. The drive is 10 miles long and has many pull-offs enabling visitors to stop and take in the scenery. There are two nature preserves along the drive that are worth visiting too. At the top, 735 feet above Copper Harbor, you will find a breathtaking 360° view of Lake Superior, the surrounding woodlands and inland lakes. On a clear day you can see Isle Royale about 50 miles away! This is a MUST do while in Copper Harbor. Catch a sunset or sunrise on top of the world." - http://www.copperharbor.org/things-to-do/scenic-drives/
A wonderful trail system for all abilities and all times of year. And cyclists, this is a great reason to bring your bike on the trip. Check out the link for difficulty ratings. Please note the Nara Park Boardwalk is still undergoing rehab following flooding; be careful as the parts that remain open do end suddenly.
Adrienne lived just down the road from here for her last semester of grad school but somehow never went. Make sure you don’t miss this gem featured in New York Times, Andrew Zimmern and Bizarre Foods, and PBS - wonderful place for fish and chips or grab a few whitefish to throw on the grill at the Air BnB!
Pasties are a local cuisine - buttery flakey dough enveloping all kinds of combinations of meats, cheeses, vegetables, and sauces. Roy's offers a wonderful variety, but Adrienne recommends the Turkey Cranberry. They also offer a wide assortment of delicious breads, bagels, donuts (yeast and cake), and always hot and delicious coffee. Their lunch options include soups and sandwiches. And all items come with a fantastic view of the channel! Make sure to get in here on Friday or Saturday, as they'll be closed on Sunday!
