Florence Airport is closest to Val d’Orcia, about a 1.5-hour drive through Tuscany. Car rentals are available, or take a train to Chiusi or Montepulciano, then a taxi. Rome’s Fiumicino Airport offers more flights and is about 2.5 hours away. You can also take a train from Rome Termini to Chiusi, then a taxi to your destination.
Rental Car
We highly recommend renting a car to explore Tuscany. Rentals are available at Florence Airport (1.5 hrs to Val d’Orcia) and Rome Fiumicino (2.5 hrs). Major companies like Hertz, Europcar, and Avis operate at both. Book an automatic in advance and bring an International Driving Permit, available through your local AAA for $20.

Travel Note
Please be sure to check your passport — Italy requires it to be valid for at least 3 months beyond your return date and issued within the last 10 years. Please note that some other European and non-Schengen countries require up to 6 months of passport validity. If you plan to travel beyond Italy, we recommend ensuring your passport is valid for at least 6 months to avoid any issues.
Travel Note
Renting a Car: The easiest way to explore Tuscany at your own pace. Roads are scenic and well-marked. They drive on the same side of the road! Book Ahead: Reserve trains and airport transfers in advance, especially during peak travel months. Pack Light: Many Tuscan towns have cobblestone streets and limited parking—rolling smaller suitcases is easier. Allow Extra Time: Italian trains are generally punctual, but give yourself wiggle room when traveling for events.
