Our first date took place on an unseasonably warm Spring day in Madison, where we agreed to treat ourselves to refreshing smoothies before hitting the books at College Library. As I completed my walk down State Street I looked up and observed only what could be described as a baller. Glowing in the Spring sunshine with an equally dazzling smile, I immediately knew that my life course would be altered. While we did make our way to the library, studying for my Microeconomics midterm was mostly a fruitless endeavor. All that interested me that day was learning more about this beautiful person sitting in front of me. She was witty and gregarious, and I willingly chose quiet conversation over silent studying. However, the conversation came to a screeching halt after 30 minutes when she declared that she needed to leave. After saying our goodbyes I watched her walk through the doors and down the stairs, thinking she was walking out of my life forever. Not long after, I too left College Library, pondering the sequence of events that day that led to her sudden departure. Did she hate the vest I was wearing? Was there something wrong with my smoothie order? After rehashing everything, I couldn't reach a conclusion on the predicament I was in. Luckily, I didn't have to. Later that day I received a message from the same phone number I had been texting the day before. It turned out that she was under the weather and needed to go home. A perfectly reasonable explanation, but, in retrospect, I think she just wanted to get rid of me for the day so she could focus on her studies rather than be distracted by my incessant talking. Many things have changed since March 2014, but I can still visualize the exact moment I saw Adeline outside of the bookstore on that immaculate Spring day in Madison. While this is 8 years in the making, I knew she was the one the moment we met, and I'm eternally grateful that she didn't hate my Strawberry Banana smoothie order.
