How We Met

From Friend Zone to Forever

Adam and Liz met through Bumble (dating app) in January of 2019. Adam came across Liz's profile and immediately swiped right to match with Liz and then proceeded to wait to see if Liz would match with him. One evening, Liz was swiping through profiles and came across Adam's profile. Liz looked through Adam's photos and descriptions, and did not feel strongly compelled to swipe right (match) or to swipe left (reject). Instead, Liz left Adam's profile untouched and closed the Bumble app for the day. Liz later returned to swiping profiles on Bumble and due to closing the app, Adam's profile was gone. As Liz continued to swipe, she came across Adam's profile once again. Liz recognized Adam's photos and decided to swipe right only because Adam had one nice photo of himself (his default) and a photo with his family dog, Mikan. As Bumble requires females to start the conversation first, Liz asked Adam about how his weekend was. Adam received notification that he had a match on Bumble and to his delight, saw Liz had matched with him. Adam quickly responded to Liz and they began to "get to know one another" by conversing about interests, hobbies, and career/goals. At this time, Liz was finishing her last year of graduate school while also juggling two jobs and finding time to date. Due to a very busy schedule, Liz declined Adam's requests for a first date all throughout January. Liz experienced some pretty subpar dates with others and finally decided to give Adam a chance in February. Liz and Adam agreed to lunch and boba on Sunday, February 24, 2019. Adam offered to pick Liz up, in which Liz declined (have to be cautious on the first date!). Adam arrived to Red Hot Wok in Cupertino, a lunch spot he chose, early. When Liz arrived, she spotted Adam right away waiting outside the restaurant. Liz approached Adam and greeted him with: "You must be Adam, right?" Adam responded with, "I think so?" Liz immediately picked up that Adam was nervous about this date as seen by his uncertain responses, difficulty in engaging in conversation or starting topics, and his non-verbal cues. The bill arrived and Liz offered to split the bill. Adam, having not experienced many dates where he was offered to split the bill, was caught off guard by Liz's offer and agreed to split. At the end of lunch, Liz had determined that Adam was not a good fit for her. Adam then asked to continue their date as they had agreed on lunch AND boba. Liz, with a tendency to people please, agreed to boba although she was ready to end the date. Adam drove Liz to a nearby boba spot, Tea Top, in which Adam paid for boba. The two of them discussed hobbies some more and realized both played Pokemon Go. After bonding over this for a little, Liz came up with an excuse that she had a phone call from a parent (work excuse) to quickly end the date. Adam expressed his wishes to meet again for a second date in which Liz responded with "that would be nice" although she did not mean it. Once returning home, Adam shared about his date with Liz to his friends who were eagerly awaiting to hear how it went and were cheering Adam on as they thought Liz was a good match. Liz, on the other hand, had already decided that there would be no second date. After "ghosting" Adam for a few days on the app, Liz told Adam that she was busy with graduating and that she would be taking a break from dating. Adam, disappointed, expressed that he understood and extended an offer to stay friends (while also searching up Santa Clara University's graduation date to make a future attempt). Liz accepted Adam's offer to be friends which was the start of Adam being placed in the friend zone. Liz and Adam began to spend a lot of time together as friends for the next 3 months. Eventually, Liz began to develop feelings for Adam after getting to know him more and developing a friendship with him. Adam officially moved out of the friend zone on May 17, 2019 and asked Liz to spend forever with him 3.5 years later.
