We met during a music theory placement exam the weekend before our first day at Brigham Young University-Idaho. We were friends that first year in college and I (Sara) even made Adam a cake for his nineteenth birthday (a really yummy made-from-scratch carrot cake)! At the end of Freshman year, Adam left school to serve a Latter-day Saint mission in the Provo, Utah mission (May 2013-April 2015), and months later I also submitted my papers and was called to serve in the Panama City, Panama mission (January 2014-July 2015). The only contact we had during that time was when I messaged Adam on Facebook to let him know that I had received my mission call. The next time we spoke was when we both went back to school after our missions (Fall 2015). We were friends and colleagues, having at least one class together every semester (e.g. orchestra!). We both worked at the Instrument Property Office in the music building, where we would talk about our chaotic dates and hopeless crushes. We did go out on a couple of dates though; but we assumed they were just friend dates and never really gave it a lot of thought! After graduation, we both went our separate ways. Adam moved to Arizona so he could continue his education at Arizona State University. He is currently pursuing two masters degrees, one in Musicology and another in French Horn Performance. I moved to Utah and started a masters degree in Orchestral Conducting. We kept in contact, texting every once in a while and even talking on the phone a few times. But we never imagined that things would change...
By the end of Spring 2019, we had both finished our first year in graduate school and had fun plans for the summer. I conducted my first full opera and Adam was doing a lot of traveling. One day he texted me to let me know he was going to travel to Oregon to visit family and that he was having a layover at the Salt Lake City Airport, and he asked if we could meet up if I had time. I thought it was a great idea--I hadn't seen him in about a year and a half, so I was excited to see him! We had a fun and wonderful time together! At the end of the date Adam asked me if I would like to go on a date the next time he was in Utah, and... I said yes! That day, he even put his arm around me for a little bit. He had never done that before! Something was happening and it was exciting, but we lived in different states now; we didn't know if it would actually go anywhere. After a few weeks (when he was back in Arizona), we talked on the phone and decided to give dating a try. Adam bought a plane ticket and came to visit me in Provo. Everything was so smooth and beautiful. We went stargazing the night he arrived, and I'll just say that that was the most romantic and beautiful first kiss ever. Being together felt so right from the beginning. A few months later we got engaged, and we could not be happier and more excited about our future! We are so in love!
Like many others, our situation has changed dramatically due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We had a very small civil ceremony (with a grand total of 8 guests including officiant and photographer!) on April 20th. I changed my school plans a little and graduated in April instead of doing it in August. So I am done with my master's in Orchestral Conducting and Adam is only two credits away from finishing his master's in French Horn Performance. He will finish it December 2020 and then he will have to take one more class and finish his thesis for his master's in Musicology. We moved to Michigan for job opportunities and are loving the #puremichigan life. We are so happy to be married, we are absolutely in love, and we're looking forward to celebrate our marriage surrounded by you, our friends and family.
