In summer of 2017, two educators went to the Massachusetts Teachers Association Summer Conference. They were there to learn about the power of the union, how rank and file members can use their combined efforts to create change. These two were us, Mike and Addie! While both involved in the same program, Union Academy, we didn't meet until the last night when Mike introduced himself. Though we work in different districts (Newton and Cambridge), it turned out that we only lived one street away and not only that, but we were both involved in the Ward 2 Somerville 2017 municipal election. HOWEVER we were canvassing for opposing candidates- yikes! That first night, we immediately got into the nitty gritty of the campaign while also discussing our hopes for our local unions. It was great and we agreed to meet up as soon as we were back in town. The very next day, back in town, we met up for coffee. Then we went to the pool. Then dinner together. Then another dinner and then some dancing and it turned out, we were into each other. Since then, we have grown the union between us- two people coming together to use their collective powers. We still educate, and our activism continues- but now we have each other. We are united in collective struggles and collective success. This is our union and it is strong. So strong, that we changed our legal status from Single to Married on July 17th, 2020. And now it's time to unite with all of you to celebrate! It means so much to us that we get to host you and we can't wait to dance and hug and be surrounded by all those we love.
