Old Hickory Country Store & Bakery is a family operated home bakery in Chiefland. They sell freshly baked artisan breads and pastries. Abby finds the Dark Chocolate Raspberry Muffins to be absolutely exquisite. She would reimburse handsomely the soul who manages to procure its secret recipe.
Cedar Key is a quaint town nestled on the Gulf of Mexico. It offers a small beach, dining options on the water, a park with a playground by the water, and rental options for kayaking and paddle boarding. If the water is nice, you can kayak/paddle board to a small island not far off the coast. Cedar Key also offers boat tours.
This area of Florida is home to many different freshwater springs and state parks, perfect for swimming, kayaking, paddle-boarding, and more! Feel free to peruse which park is closest to your place of stay and aligns with your interests. Some of Abby's favorite memories from visiting Chiefland are exploring the springs and having fun in the water! Some springs close to Chiefland are Manatee Springs, Fanning Springs, and Ichetucknee Springs.
Crystal River is a beautiful town with spring-fed rivers, warm Gulf water, and fun little shops and coffee stops! Boat tours and snorkeling tours are offered here, or even clear-bottom kayak tours. Abby likes the coffee from Cattle Dog Coffee Roasters and swimming and paddle-boarding in the river. Unfortunately, manatee-related activities will likely not be offered in August.
This underground spring is hidden within a 120-foot wide cave and offers snorkeling and scuba rentals. Levi and Abby have visited here, and loved observing the fish and turtles!
