Abby and DeSean were both members of the Indiana State University Track & Field team. They met while running back from a hard practice of running hills at the park. DeSean explained the perks of being a high jumper, and the rest is history! The high jump squad was a very tight-knit group and spent many weekends together. Eventually, Abby and DeSean become a bit closer than the other high jumpers and everyone else realized they were dating before Abby and DeSean did. They officially started dating on April 23, 2015–recognize that date from anywhere? :)

After dating for 4 years, DeSean enlisted his sister, Deseree’s, help in planning a proposal for Abby. He knew that family is very important for the both of them so he wanted both families to be there, but didn’t know how to not give it away since the families are fairly spread out. Deseree decided that her birthday would be the perfect excuse for all of their family to be in town and Indianapolis was a good meeting-ground for those that live in Nashville and South Bend. Deseree then enlisted Abby’s help to plan her “birthday weekend” in Indianapolis—picking out a restaurant, catering menu, new outfits, appointment for manicures, etc. The ruse was working because Abby knew Deseree to be a bit extra—even when she wanted a champagne toast for her birthday. Once the party had started Deseree seemingly put DeSean on the spot to give her birthday toast. Abby immediately noticed how nervous DeSean was, but thought he was just nervous to speak in front of the family and some of their friends. During the speech DeSean was mentioning where everyone had traveled from to be at the party…and mentioned Covington. Abby turned around to see that her family (+ more of their college friends) had snuck in the back of the room while he was speaking. The birthday toast very quickly turned into a proposal speech and Abby was filled with tears before she could whisper a soft “yes”. They celebrated the night away with their families and close friends. DeSean and Abby so appreciate Deseree letting them steal her birthday thunder for one year!
