Our Love Story

The Walk to Forever

Abbigal and Nathan first crossed paths one summer at a rugby tournament in Canada. At the time, neither realized they both played for the same club—Chuckanut Bay Rugby. Life carried on as it often does: passing one another at practice on the pitch, at socials, or downtown. Teammates sharing the same spaces, playing the same sport, living parallel lives, unaware of what was quietly coming. In late winter of 2024, Abbigal traveled with her friend Ava Gempler to support Ava’s boyfriend, Andy Ros, and the Chuckanut men’s team during their playoff match against Bend. Armed with donuts, Gatorade, and snacks, they came ready to rally the boys to victory. The match was grueling, swinging back and forth. Anyone who knows Abbigal knows she brings energy—heckling, shouting, and cheering relentlessly for Chuckanut. Despite the effort, the game ended in a tough loss. The team was crushed. Yet Nathan made a point to thank Abbigal for coming to support him and the team. And once again, their paths split. The following week, Nathan reached out on Facebook Messenger, thanking her again and sharing that he wanted to support her in return. Abbigal was finishing her final year at Western Washington University while playing rugby. WWU was preparing for the Regional Conference Championship against Stanford. The game delivered everything rugby promises—vicious tackles, bloody noses, massive scrums, and relentless effort. When the final whistle blew, WWU were Regional Champions. Exhausted but elated, Abbigal celebrated with her team and noticed Nathan waiting on the sideline. He congratulated her, and for a moment everything felt quiet and certain. Nathan invited her to celebrate with the Chuckanut team. That night they met at the bowling alley, talking, playing darts, eating food, laughing, and finally getting to know one another beyond rugby. What Nathan didn’t know was that Abbigal had felt a connection from the very first time they met. The next morning, Nathan invited Abbigal for a walk on Boulevard. It became their first official date. They walked the boardwalk, wandered Fairhaven, got lost in the park woods, explored a retro arcade, searched for crabs along the beach, watched the sunset, and talked late into the evening. Leaving was hard, but both knew this was only the beginning. On her way home, Abbigal laughed to herself. The night before, Nathan had mentioned that he hates walking—always looking for the nearest place to sit. Yet here he was, walking for hours without complaint. Later, he texted her that he had blisters on his feet, but that it had been completely worth it. That night, Nathan went home to game with his friends and asked them if they’d ever just known—because he believed he had just met his wife. The following week, Abbigal and Nathan spent every moment they could together. They texted all day and spent nearly every evening side by side. As their feelings deepened, Abbigal found herself needing clarity. April 14th 2024 she looked at Nathan and asked “Are you really serious about us?” Without hesitation, he answered, “Yes. I’ve never been more serious.” Gathering her courage, Abbigal quietly asked if he would be her boyfriend. Nathan laughed in surprise—then, of course, said yes. From that day forward, they began their life together—patient, kind, and rooted in true love built to last forever. Looking back, it felt poetic how long they had orbited each other without knowing. Same club colors, same muddy pitches, the same post-match laughter echoing through socials and downtown nights. Rugby had quietly woven their paths together long before either of them noticed. Every missed introduction, every passing glance, had been gently preparing them for the moment timing aligned. Together they learned that love does not arrive loudly, but steadily—through consistency, support, shared effort, and choosing one another every day. Their story is a reminder that the best things grow quietly, and last always onward, together.
