Question

What is a Coptic Orthodox Wedding and how is it different from other traditions?

Answer

A Coptic Orthodox Wedding is also known as a Crowning Ceremony. The ceremony is properly referred to as a Crowning Ceremony because during the ceremony both the groom and the bride are adorned with crowns, signifying their kingship and queenship over this new kingdom which is their home and their new life together. Perhaps once stark difference between American/Western Tradition weddings is that in the Coptic Orthodox Church, marriage is between three people - God, the Bride, and the Groom. God is the One who establishes, blesses and protects this new family. He is the bond that holds it in unity and love. His presence is essential and clear during the ceremony and in every day's life of the family. As Christ offered Himself to the Church, so the groom is to offer and sacrifice himself to his bride. As the Church honors and obeys Christ, so too does the bride honor and obey her husband. Traditionally, the Crowning Ceremony was held in conjunction with the Divine Liturgy in which the betrothed couple would be wed and finally partake of the Holy Mysteries (communion) together. This tradition has since been less common, however we have elected to continue this beautiful tradition for our wedding.
