Vietnamese Engagement Ceremony: "Ăn Hỏi" and "Bê Tráp"

A Celebration of Love, Culture, and Connection

In Vietnamese culture, the “ăn hỏi” ceremony is a formal engagement ritual where the groom’s family visits the bride’s family to officially ask for her hand in marriage. It represents the union of two families and is a beautiful blend of tradition, symbolism, and celebration. A key part of this ceremony is “bê tráp”, where unmarried friends of the couple (bridesmaids and groomsmen) play an active role by carrying and receiving the engagement gift trays (tráp) — filled with symbolic items like tea, betel leaves, wine, and sweets. This moment is not just ceremonial but also festive and full of joy, often bringing the two sides closer together. What Happens on the Day? Morning: 9 bridesmaids arrive at the bride’s house early. They change into traditional Vietnamese dresses (áo dài) and take pictures with the brides while waiting for the groom's party to arrive. At the same time, 9 groomsmen gather at the groom’s house, also dressing in matching traditional outfits. Procession: At a precisely agreed time, the groom, his family, and the groomsmen carry the engagement trays and head to the bride’s home. Ceremony & Photos: Upon arrival, the trays are exchanged with the bridesmaids in the “bê tráp” ritual. Everyone takes photos before the formal engagement ceremony begins. Celebration: Once the ceremony concludes, both families, friends, and guests stay to enjoy a celebratory lunch together. This meaningful tradition marks the beginning of the couple’s journey to marriage, bringing both families together in love, respect, and celebration.
