Many places and communities are dear to Aneesa & Othmane: Morocco, Belgium, France, LA, Islamabad, Philly, D.C. and of course, Cambridge. So as you could imagine, we struggled to figure out 1 single place to have our wedding! Ultimately, after a long journey of twists and turns, we came back down to our hometowns: the places we were raised. Tahir and Shaila Andrabi, Aneesa's parents, immigrated to Claremont, California in 1988. Although far from their native home in Pakistan, Claremont soon became the anchor of the Andrabi family. With their dad a professor at Pomona College, and their mom a community-builder and safe haven for immigrant students, the Claremont Colleges were where Aneesa, Nafeesa and Mohi grew up. It is where Aneesa spent her childhood learning to bike and swim, where she attended her first protest, and where she feels most at peace. We honor the Andrabi legacy by getting married at Pomona College! Casablanca, Morocco is where Othmane's parents met and raised their family. A teacher by training, Othmane's mom Nezha grew up in Marrakech & Tangier. A member of the Moroccan Navy, Othmane's dad Mohammed come from a long lineage of farmers near the Atlas Mountains. Casablanca is where Othmane grew up with his sister Meryem, spending his weekends playing soccer in the narrow streets and his evenings at his grandmother's home with all his cousins in Maarif. His family will be hosting a valeema for their community in Casablanca!
ASAP!
Desi formal. For women, think saris, lenghas, colorful ghararas or shalwar kameez, the more festive the better! I love, love bright colors! For men, think waistcoats, shalwar kameez or suits. Wearing your own culture’s ethnic or colorful wear is also encouraged! Reminder, the event is fully outdoors and June is warm dry heat in Southern California (around 80s during the day and 70/ in evening). That being said, Claremont does tend to cool off in the evenings. Keep this is mind when picking your clothes! For women, feel free to check out: LAAM, Generation Pk or Laksharaa. Some people have also had success with Etsy! Things to search: lehenga choli, gharara & sharara. For men, feel free to check out: LAAM, Bareeze Men, Junaiid Jamshed. Things to search: shalwar kameez and waistcoat.
Dinner at the reception will be Pakistani food. If anyone in your party has a severe allergy, please message Aneesa and she will make sure you are safe and sound! All food will be labelled with main allergens (gluten, dairy, etc.) and vegetarian food will be labelled as well.
