El Jardin is San Miguel's main plaza, located in the heart of the city. At the Zocalo, as El Jardin is often called, you can spend time people-watching, perusing the nearby shops and restaurants, and reorienting yourself should the town's winding roads lead you astray.
Intricate, pink pinnacles poking through the skyline will help you locate the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a towering parish church overlooking El Jardin from the southern side of the plaza. The prominent church's neo-Gothic design is the vision of the self-taught stonemason and architect Zeferino Gutiérrez, who is rumored to have used European lithographs of Belgian and German churches for artistic inspiration.
Fabrica La Aurora is an art-lover's paradise in northern San Miguel, just a short walk north from El Jardin. If you're looking to shop, you'll be satisfied by the diverse selection of furniture, jewelry, and contemporary art stores that pepper the complex. After you've spent plenty of time eyeing paintings and sculptures, switch your focus from palette to palate with a stop at one of Fabrica La Aurora's restaurants like the Food Factory or Café de la Aurora.
Chocolate, chocolate, and more chocolate! The raw product is harvested from organic farms in Tabasco and they blend most with honey instead of sugar. The chocolate comes in varying strengths, from 70% to 100% cacao and in different forms: chips, bark, truffles, chunks, powder, and more. It can be flavored with basil, sea salt, chili, or nothing. They also serve hot drinks, including coffee and hot chocolate.
This foodie landmark selling artisanal cheeses and scads of other hard-to-find items was started in the mid-2000s by a woman who had a herd of goats and wanted to sell her cheese. This is the place to come not only for all types of cheeses, but also homemade fresh tofu, miso paste, rice noodles, fish sauce, organic pastas, gluten-free or gluten rich flours, olive oils in bulk, cold cuts, olives, sandwiches and salads (and more). There's a small patio eating area outside.
The breakfasts are amazing from the Sexy Breakfast to both the savory and sweet French Toasts. The coffees are amazing, especially the mocha served cold. Yum! Their grilled cheese menu will blow you away. Try to eat outside if it's a warm day - the inside can be toasty near the kitchen.
