Used for centuries by Mexican cooks, this ancient form of mortar and pestle uses the rough surface of volcanic stone to more efficiently grind and release flavorful oils from vegetable and spices. Prepare salsa, mole or guacamole in our molcajete, and you’ll be hooked by the fresh and flavorful results. Includes instructions for leveling and seasoning the stone prior to use.

Materials: Stone/Cement
Origin: Imported
Care Instructions: Hand wash only- clean carefully with kitchen brush to remove all food from bowl. Do not put in dishwasher. Do not use dishwashing liquid or other soaps... Hot water only. First, soak the molcajete in warm water for an hour, scrub and air dry. Then throw in handful of wet rice and grind it with the pestle until the rice is ground fine and turns grey. Remove rice and repeat the process until the rice remains white. Now, grind rock salt until it resembles table salt. Rinse and repeat until the bowl of the molcajete is "smooth". Now you're ready to season it by grinding four cloves of garlic, 1 tsp. Of whole cumin and 1 tsp. Each of of salt and pepper. Allow this mixture to sit for 24 hours. Rinse and dry. Your molcajete is now ready for your first batch. Over time, the spices and vegetables used in the bowl will add rich flavor and depth, making each batch of salsa or guacamole a signature creation.
