Notoriously elusive, grizzly bears make a rare exception in late August, September and October when they descend on the Orford River to feast on spawning salmon. Here, where they are at ease in their natural habitat and intent on a task, we catch a glimpse of the grizzlies few get to see.
The journey involves a brief boat ride up Bute Inlet, through the Arran and Yuculta rapids to the river mouth. There, by vehicle, an experienced Homalco First Nation guide takes you through lush, mossy rainforest to various viewing towers along the riverbank. While we cannot guarantee bear sightings—these wild creatures come and go as they please—seeing several bears is typical.
