It's no secret that we love animals. From growing up with rescue pets to fostering abandoned animals in San Francisco, and from scouting rhinos in Namibia to visiting elephant sanctuaries in India, we owe many of our happiest memories to the wonder that nature creates. We all know, unfortunately, that contemporary priorities and practices are swiftly eroding some of Earth's most special species and spaces. Over 1,000 of our beloved, critically endangered rhinos were poached in 2017 alone to support the illicit rhino horn trade. Meanwhile, nearly 20M acres of forest are destroyed annually - due to aggressive logging, urban sprawl, and climate change - accelerating the eclipse of natural habitats. The century-old Wildlife Conservation Society, the original sponsor of the legendary Bronx Zoo and a favorite of Anna's great-grandmother Poppi, is a wonderful organization committed to conserving "wild spaces" in 16 regions around the world that host over 50% of our planet's biodiversity. Your donation helps WCS continue field research, preservation, and education activities in over 60 countries. Charity Navigator gives WCS the highest marks across categories, with an overall score of 93.24/100.

Our love of San Francisco is paired with a stark awareness of the fast-growing income inequality in the Bay Area, and how quickly bright, motivated youth can be locked out of opportunity. Karen Grey, Tom's mother, was a strong advocate for leveling the playing field through education. She spent much of her free time tutoring low-income students in the area, preparing them for college applications and encouraging academic exploration. She was clearly a change leader, because countless fantastic volunteer-led organizations have popped up since. One of our favorites is Minds Matter, focused on college preparedness for students in the free/reduced lunch program. This countrywide nonprofit is 100% volunteer-led and 100% free to its students, so your donation goes directly to test prep materials, summer programs, and other support for the intimidating and prohibitively expensive college application process. We both have firsthand experience with this organization: Anna through her SAT prep work at Khan Academy, and Tom with a consulting project in Boston. The San Francisco chapter of Minds Matter has a budget of under $500,000, making it too small for review by most charity evaluators, but we can both speak to the passion of its volunteers and the integrity of its programs.
