You really want to be part of our trip, but are scarce on funds? No problemo! Iceland is well known for its delicious hot dogs, with stands all along the Ring Road that encircles the island. Hot dogs happen to be Susan's favorite food group (and she is always hungry), so stopping at random stands will be an important part of our trip!

If you want to see the countryside, you must become part of the countryside! For flexibility of time and location, we will be spending a few nights camping along the Ring Road.

Filled with glacier water, this is the purest, cleanest water in the world. It is so clear, that you can almost touch the continental tectonic plates that created this lagoon. We do not have scuba diving licenses, but we sure can snorkel!

Here we will sample Iceland's legendary nightlife with a pub crawl round Reykjavik's bars. It is good to know that beer was legalized in Iceland until 1989. Cheers! Salud! Skál!

Yes, this is the volcano that erupted back in 2010 and created havoc for airlines across Europe. It is situated in the beautiful þórsmörk national park. By the way, the answer to the Millionaire question is A. Both B and C are neighborhoods of Reykjavíc, while D is a totally made up word.

We want to drive for 10 hours out of our way to go see some little birds that look almost like little rounded penguins. Why all the effort? Well, 1- They cannot be found in the Pittsburgh Zoo. 2- They can fly AND dive into water. 3- Puffins are awesome!

Back in 1973 a United States Navy DC-3 crashed on the beach here. Luckily all crew members survived the crash, but the airplane’s fuselage was abandoned. Now it’s become a photography dream location.

After a long trip, our first stop will be a relaxing stay at one of the 25 wonders of the world: the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Drinks not included.

Hallgrímskirkja church is Reykjavík's main landmark and its tower can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. It was designed by the late Guðjón Samuel in 1937, who was often inspired in his endeavours by the fascinating shapes and forms created when lava cools into basalt rock. A must see!

The Sagas are an intrinsic part of this culture, so we would like to learn about viking stories and how different religions have influenced this little piece of land.

Mývatn is a lake in northern Iceland that was formed during a massive volcanic eruption about 2300 years ago. The name "Mývatn" is derived from the vast numbers of midges (Icelandic mosquitoes) that gather at the lake and are sure to leave an impression on all who visit. We definitely won't be camping here, so help us get a room!

To be fair, Iceland hasn't really got any really high mountains. It's highest peak is Mt. Hvannadalshnjúkur which is “only” 6,921 ft when it was re-measured in 2005. Its previous height was set at 6,952ft, which is about the same altitude as that of Mexico City.

OK, this is just too cool! (literally too!) On our last days of our trip, we plan to visit the biggest, baddest glacier in Europe: Vatnajökull. We will do some hiking and, if conditions allow, some caving too.

Detifoss is reputed to be the most powerful waterfall in Europe. The falls are 100 meters (330 ft) wide and have a drop of 45 meters (150 ft) down. The average flow is 193 m3/s. The impressive Niagara Falls, for comparison, have 2400 m3/s. So Detifoss is a like the baby of Niagara Falls. Still, a fierce and beautiful looking baby.

This is the one and only geyser that gave name to all the rest in the world. It was the first geyser described in a printed source and the first known to modern Europeans. Eruptions can hurl boiling water up to 70 meters in the air.

Lofthellir, a 3500 year old lava cave, is a world of ice and darkness. Our destination is a cave that boasts the greatest natural ice sculptures currently known in an Icelandic lava cave.

Why drive when you can have dinner on a boat, see the beautiful landscape, maybe catch a glimpse of some marine animals, and maybe even have some whale soup! --- Ok, the last part wasn't very romantic.

Ok, so now we are in the middle of nowhere. Eastern Iceland is an untamed wilderness of rocky mountain peaks, winding black-sand coastlines, and quickly changing weather. We will be weaving in and out of the main road here to explore the area.
