In 2015, Genna and Sam traveled to Nepal, to volunteer with All Hands in their rebuilding efforts after the earthquake that destroyed millions of homes. In 2016, Genna became a certified doula and began volunteering for San Francisco General Hospital. She works with many women who receive services from the Homeless Prenatal Program. For 30 years, HPP has empowered low-income and homeless families, particularly mothers motivated by pregnancy and parenthood, to find within themselves the strength and confidence they need to change their lives. HPP partners with with parents to address family health and stability during the transformative stages from pregnancy through kindergarten. Since moving to California, Sam and Genna have learned from friends in the criminal justice reform movement about the amazing work that is happening to provide access to education in prisons. The Prison University Project plays a central role in new efforts to expand access to higher education within California’s prison system and nationwide, while continuing to enhance our programs at San Quentin.
