Dating back to 1692, with one of the best-preserved farmyards in the Cape, Babylonstoren was inspired by Cape Town’s historic Company Gardens. Robben Island is best known as the prison where Nelson Mandela was incarcerated. Today, it is a World Heritage Site as well as a museum, and serves as a poignant reminder of South Africa's fight for freedom and democracy. Tours are led by former inmates, who offer visitors first-hand perspectives of life in prison during Apartheid. The tour includes a visit to the limestone quarry, where the prisoners worked, as well as the cell where Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his 27-year prison sentence.

Table Mountain is 3,563 feet above sea level at its highest point, and is one of the oldest mountains in the world. It is six times older than the Himalayan Mountains and five times older than the Rocky Mountains. The original cable way opened in 1929 and has seen over 21 million people take the cable-car ride to the mountain's top. The ride provides 360-degree views of Table Bay, Robben Island, Signal Hill and the City Bowl, which can be seen from cable-car's revolving floor. At the end of the cable-car journey, you can explore two miles of trails and enjoy the unrivaled panoramic views in every direction.

Take a stroll in the bush with a ranger and follow the animal tracks, discover hundreds of intriguing plants and bushes, and learn about the tiniest creatures. We might even find a rhino or an elephant!

The residents of the traditional villages of Shangana, situated on the outskirts of the reserve, invite guests to share in the way of life of the Shangaan people. The picturesque villages are set in the shade of ancient trees in a reserve of forest and grassland, and are open every day. A bustling African market village forms the center of Shangana, where local craftspeople make and trade their craft.

The Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg is where you can see the rise and fall of Apartheid. It shows the key events in South Africa’s Apartheid history and informs you about the great figures, people and the groups who struggled for democracy. The exhibition also covers a pivotal part of the healing process – the Truth and Reconciliation Commission that was an expression of the extraordinary humanity of South Africa’s first black president, Nelson Mandela, who despite spending 27 years in prison was intent on promoting reconciliation and forgiveness.

Soweto is a city south of Johannesburg that was developed as a township for black people under the Apartheid system. Most of the struggle against Apartheid was fought in and from Soweto. It is inhabited by over 2-million people, with homes ranging from extravagant mansions to makeshift shacks. Soweto is a city of enterprise and cultural interaction and the place where some of the most momentous struggles and uprisings occurred during the apartheid era. In fact, the struggle stalwarts who lived in Soweto during that time could read like a Who's Who of black South Africa with Mandela’s fellow Peace Laureate Desmond Tutu, Frank Chikane and Walter and Albertina Sisulu, all former residents. Coursing through Soweto is the ever-vibrant Vilikazi Street, while this was once a place of tension, grief and protest this now iconic street is a busy tourist destination. Soweto is a fascinating and necessary insight into the modern-day South African township.

Situated in Orlando West, Soweto, The Hector Pieterson Museum commemorates the role of the country’s students in the struggle against apartheid. On June 16th, 1976, Soweto high school students took to the streets in a peaceful protest against the mandatory use of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in black secondary schools. The two commemorative sites are just a few blocks from where 12-year-old Hector Pieterson was shot in 1976. The museum, dedicated to preserving the memory of the 1976 uprising, is home to a collection of oral testimonies, pictures, audio-visual displays and historical documents relating to the Soweto uprisings. Together with the memorial, it commemorates those who died in the uprisings, and celebrates the students’ role in the struggle for freedom.

The Cradle of Humankind was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999. It is about 31 Miles northwest of Johannesburg South Africa, in the Gauteng province. This site currently occupies 47,000 hectares (180 sq mi) and it contains a complex of limestone caves. The Sterkfontein Caves contain the discovery of a 2.3-million-year-old fossil Australopithecus africanus (nicknamed ‘Mrs. Ples’), found in 1947 by Robert Broom and John T. Robinson. The find helped corroborate the 1924 discovery of the juvenile Australopithecus africanus skull, ‘Taung’ Child, by Raymond Dart, at Taung in the North West Province of South Africa, where excavations still continue.

Like everything else at Babylonstoren, the Garden Spa is inextricably linked to the garden and the ever-changing seasons. They like to think of it as a living spa, set within a forest of bamboo with tranquil greenery and a myriad leiwater channels to set the tone.

No visit to the Mother City is complete without taking the time to explore at least one of the three major wine routes. The beautiful Kirstenbosch Gardens, recently voted as one of the top five gardens to visit in the world, were established in 1913, to conserve and display the extraordinarily rich and diverse flora and fauna of Southern Africa. In 2004, the Cape Floristic Region, including Kirstenbosch, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Situated at the foot of Table Mountain, the 36-hectare nature reserve supports fynbos (shrub and heathland), forest and a variety of animals. It was the first national garden in the world devoted to a country's indigenous plants and homes many collections, including cycads, proteas, ericas, pelargoniums and succulents.

Former South African President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela and his family lived here from 1946 into the 1990’s. He donated the house to the Soweto Heritage Trust on 1 September 1997. The Mission of Mandela House is to provide an effective, efficient and meaningful experience to all visitors, informing them of President Nelson Mandela’s story, both in the context of his home, and in the context of his life as a whole, in a manner that promotes human rights, democracy, reconciliation, mutual respect and tolerance amongst the peoples of South Africa.

Boulders Beach is a sheltered beach made up of inlets between granite boulders, from which the name originated. It’s a sheltered public bay with a sandy beach & boardwalk, and a free-roaming colony of African penguins.
