When people are arrested, including children, the police often confiscate their coats and shoes as “arrest evidence.” As a result, people who have not been convicted of any crime leave court with no appropriate outerwear, and many do not have the money for replacements. By buying coats and shoes and having them on hand at public defender offices, we are able to provide attorneys with immediate aid for their clients. This improves public health and safety while also recognizing people’s humanity.
