Tokio Ueyama as born in Japan and moved to the United States in 1908 when he was 18 years old. From 1942 to 1945, Ueyama and his wife were forcibly imprisoned in Colorado, along with thousands of others of Japanese ancestry at Camp Amache in the southeastern corner of the state during World War II. He died less than 10 years after he was released in 1945 at the end of World War II.

William Victor Higgins was an American painter and teacher who lived Taos, New Mexico and was part of the Taos Society of Artists. He was on the founding board of the Harwood Foundation, a non-profit, which for seventy-five years has served as a public library, museum, auditorium to the town of Taos. Erin and Oliver have spent many summers in the Taos valley, with Erin's family. Most recently, Oliver took them on a trip down the Rio Grande river there.
