Ireland has a lot to offer, and one of those things is comfort food. The name of this restaurant is inspired by an old dairy and cattle farm that's located nearby. With milk and beef being two key Irish ingredients, they thought the name rather fitting for the restaurant's mission: a focus on the kitchen - heart of the house, source of sustenance, warmth and hospitality - no fuss, just good, honest Irish food. One thing that's not really done here in America are meat pies. We have chicken pot pies but that doesn't count. The Ring of Kerry is an incredibly popular drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. However, many suggest driving along the Ring of Beara instead. This west coast Peninsula has many amazing sights, including castle ruins, caves, nearby islands (you can explore via a terrifying cable car hovering over the Atlantic!), old villages abandoned during the famine, and ancient archaeological sites like wedge tombs and stone circles. Moran's is a family business dating back more than 250 years. Daniel Moran came to the village in the 1760's and served up liquor (and locally sourced oysters) on his property, which were enjoyed by local farmers. During the Oyster Festival of 1966, the first barrel of draught Guinness was brought to Moran's. The Guinness and seafood were so popular that a legitimate pub was born from that day. Moran's is now famous for their seafood fare, particularly their Galway flat oysters. The restaurant is located right next to the Clarenbridge oyster bed, situated at the mouths of the two rivers. Oyster beds require a combination of fresh & sea water, so this area created the perfect natural bed for oysters to grow (they are not cultivated in any way). Over 1 million people left Ireland during the 1840s at the height of the Great Famine, fleeing starvation and hoping for a new life in America. The Jeanie Johnston, a three masted barque built in 1847, made 16 emigration voyages to North America. The most passengers the ship ever carried was 254. To put this in perspective, the ship was only licensed to carry 40 people including crew. Despite the high number of passengers and the long voyage, no lives were lost on board. The Book of Kells is located in the Long Room at Trinity College in Dublin. The Long Room is over 200 feet long and holds 200 thousand of the Library’s oldest books and is one of the most impressive libraries in the world. Part of that is because it holds the Book of Kells, a manuscript containing Gospels of the New Testament. The book itself is beautiful - written on calfskin and elaborately decorated. A range of vibrant pigments were used, including those made from indigo, woad, yellow arsenic sulphide, and red lead. The artists layered up to 3 pigments at a time, a novel technique at the time. Located two hours southwest of Dublin, The Rock of Cashel is a prominent and quite spectacular historic site. This to us is one of the most breathtaking buildings in Ireland. Home to Benedictine nuns since 1920 after they fled Belgium in World War I, the Abbey was an all girl's Catholic school all the way up until 2010. Could you imagine going to school here? One of our favorite things to do is find old gravestones, whether they are of historial importance or just impressively old. Its a 14 acre site that consists of three terraced walls surrounding a platform on the edge of a 300 foot high cliff. The views from it are breathtaking. Evidence exists that people had inhabited the hill top as early as 1500 BC. Your gift includes entry to Dún Aonghasa, which we would cycle to from our B&B. We will actually be able to stand out on the edge of the fort's cliffs, which just drop off into the ocean. Totally scary but worth it for the photo op (don't worry we'll be careful!)

We love visiting cemeteries, as we find super old gravestones and the history they hold super fascinating. Prior to building Glasnevin Cemetery, Irish Catholics had no cemeteries to bury their dead as catholic services were heavily restricted by 18th century penal laws. Therefore, this cemetery is an important historical landmark for Irish Catholic history and the largest in Ireland. The Dead Interesting Tour is a newer addition to the cemetery, and takes an alternative view of the heritage of the cemetery. It covers sculpture, architecture, art, natural life, and lesser known stories of extraordinary lives and events. They would descend the steep 670 steps every morning and fish for the morning's breakfast, study, and tend to their gardens. The Dingle Peninsula is arguably one of the most beautiful stretches of the west coast of Ireland. Longs Riding Centre offers incredible horse treks along the peninsula. Their horses are Irish Cobs, a native Irish breed that are both docile and sure-footed. We will ride along the golden sand of Ceann Tra and over the scenic Cathair Bó Sine mountain trail.

We aren't completely sure why, but there is a dolphin named Fungie (pronounced fun-gee) who loves to visit with virtually every human who is on a boat in the Harbor of the town Dingle. Dolphins are known to be gregarious, but he is an exceptional case of a social butterfly (dolphin), and always makes an appearance, if not a large and splashy one. Killary Fjord is Ireland’s only true fjord and extends 10 miles in from the Atlantic. It boasts some of the most spectacular scenery in western Ireland. One area of Ireland we are most excited about exploring is the Connemara region. This area may be the most remote in all of Ireland. It also has some spectacular drives with incredible views of mountains, valleys, and the Atlantic coastline. We plan to spend three days in Connemara, going on many of the National Park’s walks, hiking Diamond Hill (1450ft), visiting the famine cottages and walking the great famine walk where many perished in hopes of finding food and better living situations, hiking along a fjord, and taking in all of the views of its famous drives. Our first stop after Dublin is the Southwest region of Ireland, and is the beginning of our drive up the west coast. They have an open fire, exposed ceilings and wooden finish, all the character of an old Irish pub. The rooms are surprisingly nice compared to what you'd assume a B&B above a pub would be like. And surprisingly no noise complaints from any guests! Galway is a super cool city in Ireland. Its a college town, so it is full of energy and bustling streets. Although the majority of our time we plan on exploring the rural side of Ireland, we want to spend a couple of nights in this western city. Galway's night life is next to none and its streets are full of buskers - street musicians and performers. To take in all of the culture and city life, its ideal to stay near the city center.
