Taormina & the Greco-Roman Theatre
Purchased
Take in the legendary beauty of Sicily as you drive to Taormina—the city that perfectly captures perhaps the essence of the island. Built in the 3rd century BC by the Greeks, Taormina was later almost completely renovated by the Romans. It is perched on a terrace overlooking the sea, and its medieval character will delight you. Leave your motor coach near the center of Taormina, and set out on foot as your guide leads you along cobblestone streets to the Palazzo Corvaja—a 15th-century building adorned with classic double windows. From there it is a short walk to the amazing and impressive Greco-Roman theatre that is Taormina’s iconic landmark. Like the town, the theatre dates back to the 3rd century BC. The Greeks did an incredible job of siting it—its width and acoustic qualities are so inimitable that it still used for open-air concerts today. The Romans, who came later, did some work on the theatre but even they were unable to vastly improve on the original. Explore at your leisure, and make sure you turn around to appreciate the astounding view of Mount Etna looming above the town, and the Bay of Naxos below. You will have time to stroll or shop along the famous Corso Umberto before returning to the ship.

Dubrovnik Beach Break
Purchased
Begin your outing with a boat ride alongside Dubrovnik’s magnificent and instantly recognizable City Walls, which were built between the 12th and 16th centuries. The walls are approximately 11⁄2 miles long; they boast four fortresses and no less than 33 bastions. You will also pass the Fort of St Lawrence and Lokrum Island. The first written record of Lokrum dates back to 1023, in connection with the founding of the Benedictine abbey and monastery there. According to the legend, Richard the Lion Heart was cast ashore on Lokrum when he was shipwrecked in 1192. Now it’s your turn to swim in what Jacques Cousteau labeled one of the cleanest seas in the world. Alternatively, you may elect to simply sunbathe on the pebbly beach or soak up the atmosphere as you relax in the shade with a sun umbrella and chaises lounge at your disposal. Eventually, the boat will return you to the Old Town of Dubrovnik, and you’ll have free time to explore on your own. When you’re ready, the shuttle bus will take you back to the pier.

Verona: City of Romeo and Juliet
Purchased
Follow the highway from Venice to Verona; then, set out with your local guide on a walking tour. Admire the arena built in 30 BC, which once rivaled the Colosseum and is the third largest arena in the Roman world. In the Piazza delle Erbe, discover a square that has been the center of Veronese life since the days of the Romans. A Venetian lion stands atop a column to the north of the Piazza, signifying Verona’s absorption by the Venetian Republic in 1405. The Maffei Palace, built in 1668, today houses luxury apartments and elegant boutiques. Don’t miss Piazza dei Signori, where a 19th-century statue of the poet Dante graces the Square, gazing out upon the 14th-century Palazzo della Ragione—the Veronese law court. Behind Dante’s statue lies the Renaissance Loggia del Consiglio (1493), whose council chamber boasts a fresco that includes the figures of Catullus and Pliny. Continue to Juliet’s balcony at 27 Via Cappello, where Romeo is said to have scaled the wall of Casa di Giulietta. Pose for a photo in the small courtyard and check out the names inscribed on the wall by visitors seeking eternal love. You will have free time to explore on your own before boarding the coach for the drive back to Venice and the port.

Ancient Olympia & the Village
Purchased
Two thousand years ago, Olympia was the birthplace of a sporting tradition that, millennia later, has found its renaissance in the modern Olympics. The very first Olympic games were held right here, and as you visit Olympia today you can almost hear the roar of the spectators, cheering on the athletes as they took their marks on the marble starting blocks. Temples, treasuries, porticoes and statues, as well as the Temple of Zeus with its forty-foot statue of the god, all stood here. Today you will see the ruins and fill in the gaps with your imagination and your guide’s explanation. The sanctuary of Olympia is like a park—much as it was when it was crowded with athletes, orators, merchants and philosophers. Take time to appreciate the extraordinary events and accomplishments that put Olympia on the map. You will stop briefly in Olympia village before returning to the port.

Stand in awe as you visit what is considered the most perfect example of classical architecture in the world—the Parthenon—designed as a shrine to Athena and at one time housing a massive gold and ivory statue of the warrior goddess. Re-board your coach and head towards your lunch venue. You will enjoy a Greek buffet lunch and have some time to relax. Then, you’ll head to the National Archaeological Museum, which boasts the world’s finest collection of Greek antiquities. Melissani Lake & Drogarati Cave
Purchased
Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is renowned for its many caves, fir forests and fine beaches. From the pier at Argostólion, you'll head to Drogarati Cave. Take a flight of steps leading down to a cavern of orange and yellow stalactites and stalagmites. One of the great chambers has such fine acoustics that Maria Callas came here to sing, and concerts are occasionally held here in the summer. Next, you will travel in a northerly direction, passing the town of Sami en route to the subterranean Lake of Melissani. A small boat will be waiting to take you on a breathtaking trip across its mysteriously salty, subterranean water. You will find yourself surrounded by a vast, shimmering play of blue and violet colors, created by the sun filtering through a hole in the ceiling more than 100 feet overhead. The headwater is in Argostoli, and it enters the cave by traveling across the island and through holes in the coastline. Your tour continues along the coast with views across the strait to the neighboring island of Ithaca. You'll pass through Aghia Efthimia at the base of Cephalonia's northernmost peninsula before turning west to Myrtos. Sheer white cliffs carpeted in green maquis vegetation frame a stunning crescent beach of tiny white pebbles and patches of sand against the deep blue sea.

Murano & Burano
Purchased
Upon disembarkation, leave your luggage with the attendant who will store it at the pier for your convenience. Then, board a private boat to visit two of the Venetian Lagoon’s 40 islands—Murano and Burano. In 1291, when furnaces were banned from Venice as a fire precaution, the manufacturers of exquisite glassware were transferred to Murano. Glassware was one of the few Venetian exports and as such, the secrets of this skillful craft were tightly guarded. Glassmaking was considered a privileged occupation, and glass artisans were allowed to marry into the nobility. Today, the Murano products of blown-glass mirrors, chandeliers, goblets and intricate works of art are renowned worldwide. There’s time to visit one of the many workshops and to shop. Burano is next. Brightly painted houses decorate this small and cheerful fishing village that is best known for its lacemaking. Admire these beautiful works that require hours of labor, and maybe even purchase some, if you like. Then, re-board your boat for your transfer back to the pier where you will collect your luggage and board your private bus for your transfer to the airport.
