When in Osaka... Kanpai!

After praying a temple or shrine, pilgrims would often receive stamps, commemorating their visit. Each temple would give a unique red stamp, then a handwritten inscription or illustration. This tradition is still practiced today. During our travels around Japan, we will be visting dozens of temple and collecting several Goshuin in our Goshuinchos.

The Ghibli museum only lets a small amount of people each day, making it very difficult to get tickets for. They generally sell out within minutes. Law was able to reserve a set of tickets through a combination of super secret ninja skills and way too much caffeine.

If you ask Law who his favorite magician is, the answer is undoubtedly Ponta the Smith. It turns out that Ponta actually owns a bar in Osaka 5 minutes from our hotel. We'll have 90 minutes of all-you-can-drink fun with random bar magic shows throughout the night.

Let's take a break from all the eating by doing some actual cooking for a change. At the Eat Osaka kitchen, we'll learn to make miso soup from scratch, a few traditional Japanese side dishes, a ginger pork loin, and handmade mochi.

We'll go on a 3 hour tour with local guide Tamaki through the backstreets of Osaka, discovering hidden Izakayas and quirky bars.

Yakiniku Jumbo is an established restaurant chain in Tokyo that's been a perennial favorite with local foodies. A few years ago, they opened their first boutique restaurant experience with only a dozen seats. There, the MINIMUM grade of beef is A5 wagyu.

The Tokyo culinary scene has always had an obsession with French food. So much so that they've begun to create a new style out of it, blending in Japanese techniques and ingredients based completely on seasonality and balance. We'll experience this unique fusion at L'Effervesence, famed for its 2 Michelin star rating.

A one night stay at Kakurean Hidaji hot spring in Takayama with a kaiseki prepared for two people. A kaiseki is a traditional multi-course dinner and art form balancing taste, texture, and appearance that usually consist of seasonal and local ingredients.

Tucked away in the narrow streets of Pontocho Alley, Chao Chao Sanjo Kiyamachi sells gyoza unlike anything else.

Not far from where we will be staying in Tokyo, a visit to Tsukiji Market is a MUST. We will be exploring the Outer Market and enjoy sampling some delicious food. There are about 400 shops, so it would be difficult to find those hidden gems without a guide to lead us through this giant labyrinth.

The Fushimi district in Kyoto is the center of Sake production in Japan. Famous for its high quality spring water, Fushimi makes unparalleled Sake. Kanpai!

This class will give us the knowledge and confidence to take a whole fish home and make sashimi ourselves. We will experience how to breakdown a fresh whole fish from the Kyoto central fish market with a Japanese knife made in Osaka. We will also explore several techniques used in preparing raw fish in Japanese professional restaurants such as yubiki (hot water), yakishimo (torch) and kobujime (Kelp cure). The class will end with us creating and enjoying our own sashimi set meal with rice and miso soup.

Since his first bite of o-toro, it has been Lawrence's dream to one day taste sushi from one of the few truly great sushi masters. After watching Jiro Dreams of Sushi, that dream became a locked in goal. The actual restaurant will depend on what reservations we're able to get. Many of them book 3 - 10 months out, or have exclusive rules (such as only being able to make reservations through personal referral or needing to speak fluent Japanese). After months of trying, we finally secrured a spot at Sushisho Masa.

Having Japanese breakfast in Kyoto is a special experience and great way of starting a day. The menu at Lorimer Kyoto is very simple called "ichiju san sai." which will consist of rice, miso soup, roasted fish, and side dishes. The meal will be paired with their original selection of Japanese tea. We will also get to learn the different kinds of teas as well as different ways of brewing!

Junmai-shu? Honjozo-shu? Ginja-shu? Namazake? Any idea what that means? Help us find out!

Deep in the "Japanese Alps" is a small mountain town known as Takayma. Although not as well known as Kobe, the A5 Hida Wagyu beef here is equally as amazing. Restaurant will either be Maruaki or Sakurajaya.

After exploring Kinkaku-Ji temple, we will head over to nearby Ryoan-Ji (both UNESCO world herritage sites). There, we will meet with our host, who will guide us through the intricate art and history of the tea ceremony. After experiencing her expertly made cha, we will learn to make a cup for ourselves as well.

We will travel into the heart of Gifu prefecture to meet with Asano Taro, one of 300 certified master swordsmiths remaining. There, we will spend the day learning to forge, form, an quench our own samurai knives.

No trip to Osaka is complete without trying Okonomiyaki. This Japanese dish uses an egg and flour batter flavored with dashi (miso), and layered with cabbage, meat, and anything else you can think of.

Mary loves hedgehogs, it is one of her favorite animals. It is one of her dreams to hold and feed a hedgehog.

Suntory Hibiki is Lawrence's favorite whiskey. On our trek from Kyoto to Osaka, we'll stop at the distillery itself to learn about the craftsmanship and production of Suntory whiskey and taste the component whiskeys that make up the Yamazaki single malt.

The VR zone in Shinjuku has some of the most immersive virtual reality experiences in the world. There, we will learn to master the Kamehameha and fly through the skies with Goku, compete in the ultimate game of Mario Kart, and save the world using our very own Gundams.

As avid dessert fiends, we're always looking for the next big sugar rush. Janice Wong is a world famous restaurant in Shibuya, dedicated exclusively to dessert. There, we'll have a 5 course dessert tasting, complete with cocktail pairing.
