SOME (So Others Might Eat) is an amazing organization to which we devote time and support. An interfaith, community-based organization, SOME helps the poor and homeless of Washington, meeting immediate daily needs with food, clothing, and health care. Further, SOME helps to break the cycle of homelessness by offering services such as affordable housing, job training, addiction treatment, and counseling to the poor, the elderly, and individuals with mental illness. Each day, SOME is restoring hope and dignity, one person at a time.

Far from the twin epicenters of New York and Miami, Carlos Ruiz and his Ebirac label were both feeling and generating the aftershocks of the mid-’70s salsa boom. Holed up in their own bustling Puerto Rican community center on Chicago’s west side, these third coast salseros plied their trade outside the hot lights, cutting their teeth in city parks, VFW halls, and Holiday Inn rec rooms.

In 1969, after three years as Soul Sister #1 to James Brown’s touring entourage, Marva Whitney came home to Kansas City, putting Ellis Taylor’s Forte label back at full fighting strength. She’d calmed aching crowds the day after MLK’s death, and she’d lived the life, despite its rigors—to pour out her pain and exuberance on Forte sides including “I’ve Lived The Life” and “Daddy Don’t Know About Sugar Bear,” which made national rounds in 1972.

A deep overview of Funky Nassau’s redheaded sister city, Freeport, on Grand Bahama Island. A "cargo cult" is what happens when one culture begins worshipping the byproducts of another; Cult Cargo is what happens when that devotion is returned. From 1969 to 1976, Frank Penn’s GBI studio and label cranked out a dozen LPs and twice as many singles, each infected by the Detroit-by-way-of-Miami sounds drifting east across 100 miles of Florida strait. GBI's catalog is a fruity blend of poolside soul, second-deck cruise ship karaoke, sand-in-your-bathing-suit funk, jump rope rhymes, hurricane-ravaged R&B, the regional delicacies of rake n’ scrape and goombay.

Aogashima is a beautiful volcanic island in the Philippine Sea. It is the southernmost and the most isolated inhabited island of the Izu archipelago. The island itself is a giant volcanic crater, and within that crater there’s another, smaller volcano. From Los Angeles, we fly to Tokyo; then on to Hachijojima. Once there, we can then take an inexpensive ferry to the island.
