In America, up to 1.6 million youth experience homelessness each year. According to a 2012 study conducted by the Williams Institute at UCLA Law, 40% of them identify as LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer). Considering that LGBTQ youth represent an estimated 7% of the total youth population, this number is disproportionately high.
Launch Pad is a ‘street free sleep’ initiative, fueled by a collective of concerned citizens within the LGBTQ and allied community, which strives to provide open and affirming safer sleeping shelters for homeless youth in Davidson County, Tennessee. Their mission is to create a network of temporary safer sleeping shelters for homeless youth 18-24 years of age, which are open and affirming to LGBTQ youth.
