You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui’s massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey – from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. You'll marvel at the crater's eerie landscape of cinder cones and ancient lava formations. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won’t one day wake up.The Hawaiians revere Haleakala as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos. At sunset you may think that Pele has awakened, as the clouds are on fire till dusk quenches the flames and slowly transforms the sky into a starry dome.

Put on your swimsuit and hop aboard a catamaran for the channel crossing to Molokini, a tiny crescent of an island just off the Maui coast and one of the top ten snorkel sites in the world. It is all that remains above water of a volcanic crater that resulted from an eruption some 200,000 years ago. Explore a lush reef with colorful coral combinations found nowhere else in these islands and home to more than 250 species of fish.Weather permitting, you’ll make a second stop at Turtle Arches where you can swim and snorkel while keeping your eyes open for the Hawaiian green sea turtles that frequent these waters. This small-group excursion takes you to the lush Hamakua Heritage Coast.Start with a drive through the Japanese Gardens of Liliuokalani on your way to Rainbow Falls. Stop along the Onomea Scenic Route for a photo op of Onomea Bay, then walk down a rainforest trail to check out 442 foot tall Akaka Falls.
