Staying in inexpensive Airbnbs in Rome and Naples has allowed us to splurge a little for our hotel in the Amalfi Coast. We absolutely cannot wait to eat dinner overlooking the beautiful Amalfi Coast! Last time we were in Italy, our favorite restaurants were osterias or trattorias - these are typically small family-owned restaurants with excellent food.

During our day trips, we generally like to stop off in hometown cafes and family-run osterias to sample the local cuisine. As we're heading into the heart of the birthplace of pizza, this is sure to include many samplings of the pride of Naples. Your gift would buy us each a pizza and drink.

While on the surface this may appear to be a purely Em-focused gift, anyone who has been hiking with us knows that the presence of hiking poles exponentially improves the experience for all involved. While Capri is beautiful oasis during the day, we've been told that its true vibrancy comes out after the tourists leave and the locals let their hair down. Your gift will give us the ability to extend our day trip to Capri into an overnight on this island paradise.

We found a great Airbnb in Naples that will cost us about $125 for two nights. It's a great find, located right near the train station.

One big reason we wanted to go to the Amalfi Coast was to partake in the natural wonder of the Blue Grotto off of the island of Capri. With an unearthly blue caused by light refracting off the surface of the shallow pool, the sea cave is only accessible by the tiny rowboats our hotel (and others in the area) arrange to ferry guests from nearby Anacapri. Waiting for the seas to clear in Anacapri, we'll stroll the Gardens of Augustus, spy the island of Li Galli, and the hike the overlook above the Faraglioni (rock formations). Each of your gifts will buy a third of ticket cost to this day of natural splendor.

We found a fantastic Airbnb in Rome that will cost us about $225 for three nights. The studio apartment is in the center of Rome, within walking distance to the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and many other historic sites!

Rather than take the longer bus and train routes, we'd like take the ferry across the Bay of Naples to enjoy our last look on this trip at Capri and the Italian coastline. Your gift will purchase a one-way ferry ticket from Sorrento to Naples via Capri.

We found an amazing cooking class at the home of one the Amalfi Coast's premier home chefs, Sergio, and would like to book an evening with the chef. During the class we'll make fresh pasta, fresh gnocchi, and tiramisu, sampling his homemade wine as an aperitif, and limoncello made from the groves surrounding his home. Each of your gifts will buy half the price of admission to this delightful evening with Sergio.

To start our Roma trip the way anvient Romans historically entered the city, we plan to ride - bicycles, not chariots (sadly) - along the ancient thoroughfare through Appia Antica Regional Park and up to the promenade where Circus Maximus and the Colosseum await. Your gift would cover transportation to/from the bike rental location, two rentals, and lunch at one of the several cafes along the route.

On our way back to Rome, Naples - and by proxy the ruins of Pompeii - provides us a great opportunity to explore this wonder of the natural world. With a good pair of walking shoes and Rick Steves guiding our way, your gift will cover two tickets to experience the Roman ghost town, learning from the surrounding museums, and picnic overlooking the shores of the city.

Positano is a cliffside village on southern Italy's Amalfi Coast. It's a well-known holiday destination with a pebble beachfront and steep, narrow streets lined with boutiques and cafes.
