GRANT’S HOUSE provides after school and summer programming that facilitates the growth of children and young adults with special needs. GRANT’S HOUSE was created on behalf of the inspirational life of Grant House. Grant was a Wabash Center employee that passed away at 25, and left a large legacy behind. With community support, we proudly create a project that will benefit generations to come because of the life Grant House led. GRANT’S HOUSE will reflect Wabash Center’s mission and Grant’s passions of setting goals, community participation, and strive for adult independence. Our community needs a resource that will accommodate individuals after academic hours, to form relationships and life skills. GRANT’S HOUSE is founded to create an outlet for young individuals with special needs and their families, so each individual has the opportunity to actively grow. May our ultimate goal for GRANT’S HOUSE be to have bodies, hearts, and minds thankful to be alive and working towards lifelong happiness under its roof. We must all work towards the goal of optimizing the quality of life for individuals with specials needs from day one. There must be a goal to service each child and provide them direct options from the moment of diagnosis. There are many organizations that provide after school and summer care and services. However, there is not currently in the state of Indiana an after school or summer program that specializes in children with special needs or disabilities that provides integrated inclusion on a year-round basis. GRANT’S HOUSE will be the first. With the growing local population, there is a need for GRANT’S HOUSE. There are currently over 3,000 students in Tippecanoe County who have been identified as needing specialized supports. Our program is tailored to informing parents of a child with special needs, providing a safe haven for children and their families to become directly involved in the community, and ensuring a successful transition for children and young adults seeking extracurricular participation. From birth to later in life, GRANT’S HOUSE will make a positive and profound difference in the lives of people every day. There is a lack of specific services that accommodate individuals with special needs or disabilities that are capable of attending an after school resource and those that are close to graduating from their academic career. We are not currently meeting the needs nor the potential of our youth looking for an activity that has year-long consistency. We are also not meeting the needs nor the potential for young adults looking to make the next life step. Many individuals are not qualified or prepared for the workforce or for strict community integration. GRANT’S HOUSE would provide a steady transition for all GRANT’S HOUSE participants and their families. By growing with the youth and their families, we would be able to properly meet the specific desires of each individual and establish a lifelong relationship. It is our goal to grow with the population we serve. GRANT’S HOUSE will give our community a direct route into the lives of our children that need the services and life building skills we can offer them. The current after school program requires sufficient space but is in need of a setting that is more accessible to the community at large and invites active community participation. Our current space will only allow for minimal growth, is not equipped with a diverse environment for activities, and it is not externally known as a Wabash Center program. There is a need for community understanding of the full scope of services that Wabash Center provides outside of its current Sheltered Workshop and Day Programs. There is an overall lack of community knowledge with our current after school and summer program. Though Wabash Center has campus expansion limitations, GRANT’S HOUSE would put a face to an expanding program that will definitely benefit our community. We are all equal in the eyes of life. “Anyone of us is just one moment away… one birth, one sickness, one accident, one diagnosis away from knowing someone in our life that will benefit from what GRANT’S HOUSE has to offer in this community.” GRANT’S HOUSE will always have the long term goals of being better, more bold, more accepting, more helpful, more accessible, and offer more services. GRANT’S HOUSE will be made possible by the community’s choice to act on a need and the drive of Wabash Center and The House Family to passionately spread the word of hope. We are reaching out to you in hopes of serving our community on a greater scale. Wabash Center, The House Family, and our after school and summer care participants thank you for considering our endeavor. Building GRANT’S HOUSE will change the course of opportunity for students and young adults with special needs or disabilities. The expansion of Wabash Center will be a significant step towards providing the highest quality of services for the individuals and their families that we serve.
