Sunshine Learning Center
Group gift
The Rohingya People are an ethnic group, the majority of whom are Muslim, who have lived for centuries in Myanmar, which is 90% Buddhist. As you may have read in the news, the Rohingya People are being forced to leave their homes because of violence, death, and rape. Many Rohingya have been displaced in neighboring countries such as Bangladesh and Malaysia. Although the Malaysian government has been critical of the situation in Myanmar, Rohingyan refugees in Malaysia experience institutional discrimination. It's a blessing that the Rohingyan refugees don't have to worry for their lives on a daily basis, but they continue to suffer from a lack of housing, work, and education for the children. Many men take on risky jobs, which end in injury. Many of the families live alongside swamps in dangerous areas. Needless to say, life is still very hard for these Rohingyan refugees. The Sunshine Learning Center (SLC) was formed to help the Rohingyan refugees in Penang, Malaysia. The center's main mission is to help the Rohingyan refugees build a new life in Penang. They assist in getting families UNHCR status, which is recognition by the United Nations that they are refugees. This not only keeps status holders from being detained, but it also gives them access to healthcare at UN MSF clinics. So far SLC has sponsored about 150 men, women, and children. Finally, SLC provides basic education including English, math, and computer courses for the children, and English and computer courses for the adults. Currently we teach 40 students, 6 days a week in our own facility close to their residences. SLC does not have institutional or governmental support. All of their materials, books, tables, chairs, and computers come from donations and charity. Outside of a couple of part-time administrators, all of the teachers are volunteers. We hope that the Sunshine Learning Center will provide the Rohingyan refugee community with the education and tools to change not only their own futures, but the future of the Rohingyan People. Therefore, instead of a wedding gift, we'd like you to consider donating to the Sunshine Learning Center. Your contribution will play a vital role in their mission. Your generosity can change the lives of many people and the future of the Rohingya People. No amount is too small. As Jesus said in Mark 12:41-44, we should give out of our hearts. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.
