Lava Mae started in San Francisco about a decade ago when a woman with a big-hearted vision teamed up with an architect to refurbish old Muni buses into mobile showers for the homeless. Aly learned of the organization while doing her thesis research in college, and has been able to volunteer with them periodically in the last 5 years. Since living in the Bay, we've seen this organization succeed in bringing dignity back to those who are so often dejected, invisible, and just struggling to get any stable footing. The program runs on tons of volunteer help, a really cool staff, and multiple bus routes; they're now in the East Bay and Los Angeles. Check out more about Lava Mae at: https://lavamae.org/

We stumbled upon a young ceramicist through Instagram who makes these beautiful and funky hand-painted plates, bowls, platters, and the like. They all feature fruits and vegetables, flowers and plants, and we really love them. They compliment the flower and vegetable plates that Aly inherited from her Nonna, by the American ceramicist Ernestine Cannon who worked in Italy.
