As BSU alums, Evan and Cara would like to honor Biology Professor Dr. Jenna Mendell by collecting money for the charity she so devotedly participates in. Not only does she recruit BSU biology students to travel to Cambodia and participate in this project, but she incorporates it into her biology lessons via water sample and filter analysis. It is wonderful that professors like Dr. Mendell take an active role in improving our world and educating students about issues that exist outside their own comfortable communities. Cara was working as an internal medicine technician at a local animal hospital when Jenna happened to bring in one of her rescue dogs. When she found out that Cara would be attending BSU in the fall of that year, she decided to show her appreciation by supplying Cara with all her textbooks for that first semester. We encourage you to do us the honor of donating! Water for Cambodia (WFC) originated in 2002 under the direction of Middletown Rhode Island Rotarian Gunther Hausen. On a visit to Angkor Children’s Hospital in Siem Reap Gunther and his wife Nicole learned of the hundreds of children arriving at the hospital with preventable waterborne diseases due to the lack of clean drinking water. In response to the hospital's urgent request for help, Gunther began the Water for Cambodia project. In addition to providing biosand filters, he understood that teaching literacy was important for the women care givers to achieve improved health and economic conditions for their families. www.waterforcambodia.org
