Since we live in our nation's capital, we think it'd be wonderful to check out Japan's. (Okay, Mike went when he was 10, but our guess is things look a little different nowadays)

How could this not be on our Japan to-do list?

Izakayas are essentially pubs that serve shared dishes that pair well with alcohol and other drinks. Some of the best ones are in the Golden Gai district—an area consisting of six alleys lined by almost two hundred tiny izakayas.

People in Osaka live to eat and drink, which gives rise to a famous local expression, Kuidaore (literally translated to mean “to eat until one falls over"). Since we love to eat, we're excited to check out Osaka’s food offerings--including its most famous street food, takoyaki, fried bite-sized balls filled with octopus and other goodies.

We'd love to visit Kyoto on our trip. It was Japan's capital for over a thousand years and is home to Kiyomizu-dera, a UNESCO world heritage site. And as Mike notes, "it's an incredibly beautiful place."

Namche Bazaar is located in the Khumbu region of Nepal--and is considered the gateway to the high Himalayas. We'll be staying at a teahouse, a small hotel known as 'bhatti' that offer trekkers a place to sleep and home-cooked meals.

We'll likely stay in Kathmandu for a couple of days to check out sights on a bicycle rickshaw. Sights that we'll see will include: both Shechen Monastery, which was founded in the late 17th century and Boudhanath, one of the largest stupa's in the world.

Hundreds of years ago, ryokans were a place for Japan's nomadic samurai to rest their limbs and reflect. A ryokan is a traditional, family-run Japanese inn that is usually close to a hot spring. One highlight of staying at ryokans is often the multi-course kaiseki meals that revolve around local fish and ingredients.

Hopefully our journey overlaps with one of these 15-day tournaments--or if it doesn't, we can catch a morning practice session at a sumo stable...

Robot Restaurant in Tokyo’s Kabukicho red-light district features a cabaret show with performances full of flashing lights, taiko drums and techno music. We'll see glitzy girls, giant pandas, dinosaurs, ninjas and (of course) robots dance :)

Help us tour the sites around Japan's former capital city. We'll visit sites such as the Nishiki market (one of the busiest Kyoto fresh food markets),Nijo Castle (the former Kyoto residence of the shogun with spacious Japanese gardens), the Kinkakuji Temple (the famous Golden Pavillion), and Ryoanji (one of the most famous Zen rock gardens in Japan).

After our Nepal trek, we're hoping to rest on a beach somewhere, either in Japan or on the way home.The name Okinawa means "rope in the open sea", a fairly apt description of this long stretch of islands between the four main islands of Japan and Taiwan. We'd like to spend a couple days exploring the area, including island-hopping and snorkeling---and hopefully learning why this place lends itself to its residents' having the longest life expectancy in the world. (It's home to more than 400 centenarians!)
