As you may know, Alyssa has been working with foster youth in Los Angeles County for the last 7 years. There are currently 480,000 children in the foster care system nationwide, and 60,000 in LA County alone. Recently, a new federal legislation was passed called the "Families First Act," which enhances support for families to help children remain or be placed in their home settings and therefore reduce the use of congregate care settings. Although the intention of this legislation is genuine, it was enacted too quickly and without adequate preparation, resulting in hundreds of foster youth across LA County being abruptly discharged from their congregate care placements and being forced to spend the past few months in hotels or on the streets. The foster system is in need of strengthening and we would appreciate a donation of any size to "Together We Rise," a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the way kids experience foster care in America.
