Things To Do

The big island is really best explored with a car, there are so many beautiful places to see! If you have time while you're here, we highly recommend visiting other islands — especially the North Shore of Kauai (Hayden's favorite place!) We aren't usually guidebook people, but this one is super well done: https://www.amazon.com/Hawaii-Big-Island-Revealed-Guidebook/dp/1949678261/

Beaches

Mauna Kea Beach (Kaunaʻoa Bay) – One of the most beautiful white‑sand beaches on the Kohala Coast, perfect for swimming and sunbathing. There is parking available at the Mauna Kea resort (even if you're not a guest) or you can hike from Waialea or Hapuna beach along the Ala Kahakai trail. Makalawena Beach – A secluded gem with white sands and turquoise water. Note: a 4WD is recommended to reach the trailhead and there’s a short but hot hike involved — bring water and sun protection, but it's worth the trouble! Hāpuna Beach – A long, soft sand beach with great swimming, bodyboarding, and beach days. Large public parking lot. P.S. All beaches in Hawaii are public by law, most of the resorts will have free parking and easy beach access.

Snorkeling

Manta ray night snorkeling — we highly recommend the smaller tours operating out of Puako rather than the more crowded options in Kona https://liquidhawaii.com/manta-ray-snorkel/ Two Step (Honaunau Bay) – Fantastic snorkeling right off the shore with vibrant marine life (turtles, fish, coral). Captain Cook / Kealakekua Bay – Beautiful snorkeling area you can access by kayak or by hiking down (the hike is hot and exposed — bring lots of water!). Waialea Bay (Beach 69) – A gorgeous beach with great snorkeling (especially in summer and calmer seas).

Hiking

Pololū Valley Trail – Hike down to a stunning black sand beach with dramatic cliff views — worth the trek for the scenery. Ala Kahakai Trail (Waialea Beach to Mauna Kea / Mauna Launai) – A coastal historic trail offering scenic hiking and ocean views along the shore. End your hike with a cocktail at the Mauna Kea beach bar, pricey but perfect :)

Food & Markets

Costco or Safeway in Kona are the cheapest options if you are staying in a condo/house and want to stock up on groceries. Unfortunately, everything is more expensive in Hawaii! Kawaihae Market – Great spot for poke and fresh caught fish. Foodland – A convenient grocery option with solid poke. Waimea Farmer’s Market (Saturday) – Local produce, baked goods, and handmade items—perfect for breakfast or a casual lunch.
