We met at Buchanan Elementary School in Lancaster, PA when Bill was in third grade and Zoe was in second grade. It was not love at first sight. Or second. But when we got to high school, we both joined the McCaskey Mock Trial team. After hundreds of hours practicing and debating with each other, we couldn't help but become best friends.
We spent last summer in Portland, Oregon - Bill doing an internship and Zoe enjoying her first summer off as a teacher. One of our first weekends together, Bill planned a getaway to Bend, Oregon, where we went spelunking in a cave with tight crawlspaces, a drippy ceiling, and probably ghosts. Bill tried to grab the ring from his pocket and pop the question when we were deep in the cave and had both turned our headlights off for a thrill, but Zoe got too scared and turned her headlamp back on before he had the chance. When we got out of the cave, we found a space to rest before we went back to the car. Bill started talking about all of our adventures together and how he wants to keep adventuring forever before nervously pulling out the ring. Zoe never actually said yes - just "holy shit" a few times. Are we even engaged?
