Question

Format of Wedding

Answer

This is a Chinese Banquet style event and may be somewhat disorganized due to the nature of how these were held in the olden village days. Upon arrival at the venue, the banquet hall the wedding is held in will have a large portrait of the the bride and groom. At the entrance, there will be a table where family members will be collecting red envelopes and recording the gift amount (see our Gifts FAQ below). Before the banquet begins, there is an hour reserved for friends and family to take photos with the bride and groom while snacks are served to your table and you're free to socialize. Typically, immediate family will take photos first, followed by extended family, and then friends. Afterwards, the MC will direct everyone to witness the wedding party walk down the aisle which is then followed by the groom and finally the bride. There will be an exchange of rings and vows to each other. Immediately after, dinner is served while the bride and groom get changed for the tea ceremony. The tea ceremony is typically the largest portion of the wedding banquet as we bow and serve tea to their elders and receive gifts to bless the marriage. The MC's will typically announce each gift and the best man and maid of honor will assist the bride and groom put the jewelry presented to them on. This can go on for about an hour as everyone eats. Afterwards, the bride and groom will change outfits again before the we go around the room thanking everyone for their attendance and sharing a toast with each table. After that, festivities will wind down, and the servers will hand out some takeout boxes if you want some food for the next day (we stan no food waste)! In any of the intervals when we are prepping for the next portion of the banquet, the MC will provide entertainment to the guests, usually in the form of some live singing.

Answer

6:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M.

Question

Dress Code

Answer

We would prefer that everyone show up in cocktail attire. Please try to avoid red and white as that is reserved for the wedding party. 8/27/2024 Update: Bridesmaids will be in dusty pink colored dresses. If you already have your dress and it is this color, don't worry about it! Feel free to continue wearing the dress! That being said, it isn't traditional to dress up. Don't be surprised if you spot people in less than cocktail attire. We've seen kids in hoodies wearing airpod maxes (slay).

Question

Gifts/Red Envelope

Answer

Per tradition, we will not have a wedding registry and are only accepting the customary gift of a red envelope containing cash. There is NO obligation to give us anything, we are happy to have you at our wedding and your presence is priceless! The standard amount of money in the red envelope is typically equal to the cost of the meal and then varies based on closeness to the groom and bride. This ranges anywhere from $150-$300 per person. There is a lot of superstition around numbers, and that includes the amount of money you give. Keep in mind lucky and bad numbers. 8 is considered lucky as it is associated with wealth, prosperity, success, and status. Meanwhile, 4 symbolizes death as the pronunciation of 4 in Chinese sounds similar to die (ex: 44 is saying die die). The numbers 14 and 24 are even worse than 4 by itself as 14 means certain death and 24 means likely to die. Of course this can be pretty arbitrary when approaching this, let us know if you have any questions!
