How We Met

Zach first saw Katelyn at an a cappella concert hosted by her college group (The Chordials) in October, 2017. She was president of the group, and MC'd the concert. He was interested. Fast forward a bit and her group teamed up with his (A Completely Different Note) to perform at a UConn volleyball game. He stared, but she was too busy watching over her group to notice. After this he asked his group about her. Someone said she was taken. Zach shrugged and let things be, though she remained in his thoughts. By January 2018 Katelyn had graduated. Zach went to the bar with his friend Tommy, who brought along Cayla and Emily (both close friends of Katelyn). Seeing an opportunity, Zach made sure to bring Katelyn up in conversation with Cayla, who told him Katelyn was newly single! Cayla said Katelyn will be at the a cappella Rush party later that month. The night came and went, and Katelyn, knowing both that Zach was lurking and that she had no clue how to act a college party, made it a point not to say hi. Then God intervened! Zach was a sober driver, and on his drive back from one trip, she happened to be heading to her car. She said, "hey there," in an awkward, squeaky voice, and they stopped for a quick chat. They talked about his recent oral surgery, and how he was taking pain meds (though his exact words were along the lines of, "on drugs"). He also mentioned knowing that she lived in Barkhamsted, as his Facebook stalking had taught him. Classic winner moves. What he didn't know was that these hiccups eased her nerves, and she was flattered that someone so cute would get flustered around her. She left before he could work up the courage to ask her out. Zach let another month pass before he, with help from friends, drafted, redrafted, re-redrafted, and sent her a Facebook message asking her out to coffee...and the rest is history...

How He Asked

January 5th, 2019

Zach told Katelyn that his Worship team audition was set for that evening. That day, Zach went to the church early with his friend Joe, Katelyn’s friend Amanda, and Katelyn’s sister Mariah, and set up one of the classrooms with lights, posters he had made with Amanda and Mariah, and small candles in votives. They also set up a table with a 24-rose bouquet, a photo board with memories of the couple, and a plaque with Scripture references. After the evening church service, Zach and Katelyn headed to the classroom. She was expecting him to audition, and even grabbed him a cup of water...As they walked in, Katelyn elegantly tripped on the candles Zach had set up. She had gotten distracted by the soft guitar that Joe was playing. The tune wasn’t familiar to her, and shortly after entering Zach began to sing! It was an original song that he worked with Joe to create. Katelyn and Zach faced each other while he serenaded her. Tears were non-stop from her eyes; she was overwhelmed with the love she could feel around her. At the end of the song, Zach got down on one knee and sang, “Will you marry me, Katelyn?” With the little breath she had left she said yes; they’ll forever remember the kiss that followed.
