Question

What is the weather like in Cusco in late May?

Answer

Late May in Cusco is typically the start of the dry season, with sunny days and clear skies, especially in the afternoons. Temperatures are usually mild during the day but can get quite cool in the mornings and evenings due to the altitude. We recommend bringing layers so you can stay comfortable throughout the day, including a light jacket or sweater for the evenings.

Question

What should I know about the altitude in Cusco?

Answer

Cusco is at a high altitude (over 11,000 feet), so we recommend arriving at least 24 hours ahead of any activities to acclimate (especially if you are planning on going to Machu Picchu). Take it easy when you first arrive, stay hydrated, and give yourself time to adjust. Locals recommend drinking coca tea or chewing on coca leaves to help ease mild altitude symptoms, both of which are commonly offered in hotels and cafés throughout the city. Alcohol can also feel stronger at altitude, so it’s best to go slowly while your body adjusts.

Question

What is the currency in Peru and how should I handle money?

Answer

The local currency is the Peruvian Sol (PEN), with an approximate exchange rate of 1 USD to 3 PEN. Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and many restaurants, but we recommend carrying some cash for taxis, markets, and small shops. ATMs are readily available throughout Cusco.

Question

What is the food like in Cusco?

Answer

Peru is globally known for its cuisine and is considered one of the top food destinations in the world. In fact, Maido in Lima has been ranked the number one restaurant in the WORLD! In Cusco, you’ll find a vibrant mix of traditional Andean flavors and modern Peruvian dining throughout the city. Local dishes to try include ceviche, lomo saltado (stir-fried beef with rice and fries), alpaca, and a wide variety of potato-based dishes, as Peru is home to hundreds of varieties. You’ll also find excellent soups, fresh juices, cafes, and rooftop restaurants around the historic center, with plenty of vegetarian and international options available as well.

Question

How should I plan my arrival and trip length?

Answer

We recommend arriving ahead of any planned activities to settle in, adjust to altitude, and explore Cusco at a relaxed pace. If you are planning to attend the Machu Picchu excursion, we'd recommend arriving at least 1-2 days before for optimal acclimation.

Question

Do I need to attend every wedding event?

Answer

No, but we'd love for you to! All events outside of the wedding day are completely optional. We would love to see you at anything you can make, but there is no expectation to attend every activity. Feel free to join what works best for your schedule and travel plans.

Question

Is it safe to drink the tap water?

Answer

It is recommended to drink bottled or filtered water during your stay. Most hotels and restaurants provide safe drinking water.

Question

How do I get around Cusco?

Answer

The historic center is very walkable, and most restaurants, shops, and hotels are nearby. For longer distances or hillside areas, taxis are easy to find and inexpensive. Ride apps like Uber also operate in the city.

Question

What about Lima?

Answer

Many flights to Cusco connect through Lima, and it can be a great opportunity to explore a bit if your schedule allows. Lima is Peru’s coastal capital and has an incredible food scene, ocean views, and great neighborhoods like Miraflores and Barranco. If you’re able, we recommend adding a day or two to your trip to experience it before heading to Cusco.
