Alex had moved to Dubuque for her new job back in May 2020 and even though it presented its own set of challenges like finding friends to help move, renting a truck, and getting settled in a whole new environment... in the middle of COVID, God had a plan. Meanwhile, Zach had been busy spending time with family and friends, golfing, cooking, and hiking. He had no idea what was around the corner. In June 2020, Alex was invited to check out the Diamond Joe Casino with a few of her girlfriends and possibly meet this handsome gentleman her friend and friend's boyfriend insisted on her meeting. After losing 5 dollars on the penny slots, Alex's luck shifted. Down the stairs came her friends with Zach. She thought Zach was handsome and funny, while he thought Alex was cute and talkative. The night went on and the two went their separate ways with their friends. It wasn't until September when they reconnected. They got to know one another through texting, calling, going on hikes in Swiss Valley/ Mines of Spain with Charlie (Zach's Dog), and the occasional dinner out where permitted. After many dates, meeting the families, and a long weekend to Lake of the Ozarks, the two made it official!
After 2 years of making memories, learning about each other, supporting one another through loss, celebrating the purchase of a new house, lots of time with family, and welcoming a new puppy to the family, it was time for the next step. On their two year anniversary, Zach took Alex up to the Mines of Spain where they had their first date. He had wanted to show Alex the "fog rolling across the Mississippi" that morning. They had gone to the overlook point and encountered an older gentleman getting in his morning workout. The 3 of them conversed while the man continued his stretches. After trying to find other suitable locations, Zach walked Alex back to the car. She was convinced a proposal wouldn't happen as they approached the car. But then Zach got down on one knee and asked Alex to marry him. She said YES!
